We filed for the 10 year I-551 card mid august and just received it. The card says category IF1.

We are kind of at a loss now, what do we do next lol?

The papers that came with the card were (as far as we can remember) the same as the papers that came with the conditional 2 year card. A pamphlet (M-617) welcoming him to the US and a letter (I-797D) that had the card attached showing his application had been approved with very generic information on the permanent resident card and the EAD.

Is he now "free" from any kind of paperwork until he decides to file for citizenship/the renewal of the card in 10 years?

Please advice and thank you! We couldn't have done this without you guys.

Both the green card holder and the sponsor (while the I-864 remains in effect) need to submit change of address documents. The green card holder can do it online.

I'm not sure what you mean with "while the I-864 remains in effect".

I thought this only remained in effect for the initial part of the visa application, not once you are past the unconditional green card?

Do you need to manually lift this or something?

Mehur4e, yes it changed about a week before it arrived in the mail apparently. We weren't expecting it for another 2 months or so and had not been checking the case status at all (would have just driven us crazy lol), so we were completely surprised by it.

The I-864 remains in effect until one of the following occurs:

(i) the LPR dies.

(ii) the I-864 sponsor dies.

(iii) the LPR becomes a US citizen.

(iv) the LPR permanently relinquishes their permanent residence in the US and ceases to be an LPR.

(v) the LPR can be credited with 40 qualifying quarters of employment by the Social Security Administration.

As you can see, divorce has no effect on it, nor does obtaining a permanent unconditional green card.

If you applied for ROC 3 months before your conditional green card expired, receiving your ten year card only three months after it expired seems like a miracle.

Ha, the USCIS says the most important part of applying for US citizenship is the right to vote, how about the most important part is getting free of the USCIS, and this includes the I-864. You never know in this economy what is going to happen, like losing your job, or even getting hit by a hit and run driver.

We applied for our ROC exactly 90 days before my wife's and stepdaughter cards expired, and it was exactly one year and a couple of days later we applied for US citizenship that seems to move faster than dealing with these service centers as many others have and many never seen their ten year card. Wife finally received hers one week before her oath ceremony, was going on with an I-551 stamp in her foreign passport book, her one year extension was already expired. Then she was free.

Not so with my stepdaughter, she barely turned 18, and I contribute this to the super long delays in our AOS, so we had to wait another two years before she could apply for US citizenship. I pleaded with the USCIS on this issue, if our AOS was just one week earlier, she would have been under 18 and received her US citizenship with her mother. No way, 18 is 18. Then we were finally free.

Because of our long delays in ROC processing we received an RFE for updates so when applying for US citizenship for my wife, we had all that evidence in our computer, just had to print out all that stuff again. Plus they want proof I was a US citizen, another copy of my divorce papers that I was free to marry, and yet another copy of our marriage certificate, for my wife, a copy of her divorce papers, so we had all this stuff in our computer, was a stack of papers about an inch thick. For my stepdaughter two years later, she didn't need anything, but was another 1,350 miles of driving, one for her biometrics, another for her short ten minute interview, and a third for her oath ceremony, then we were finally free.
