Assembling a strong application

Hello,

I am currently filling out applications and getting materials together for the K1 visa application, and have a few questions. First, I want to get some proof of an ongoing relationship, and we have photos, but I'm afraid that the lack of emails, and phone bill stuff could make it harder. We did live together for 6 months, but the lease got lost in the move. We do have our student cards showing we went to the same school for 15 months, and student visas that say the address we lived at on them. Are those and the photos enough? I am also worried about filling out the forms correctly before I send them, should I look into hiring a lawyer, or is it something I can do myself? I am not sure if we can afford a lawyer, but I want to be sure that the petition passes.

Where did you live together, VN, US, elsewhere? Where are the both of you now?

A signed statement from the landlord would be better than nothing. Proof of enrollment at the same school would be good. Visas, passport stamps showing you in the same country, etc.

It's about giving evidence of a bona fide relationship from beginning to present day. Time spent together is important. Chat, correspondence, etc. is good. If you are students together your evidence will be very different from couple who are living in different countries and visiting occasionally.

Do you currently meet the income requirements?

Read through the VN regional forum here on VJ to get a sense of what's ahead. HCMC is one of the more difficult places to secure a K visa.

We lived together in Japan, and it would be from Hanoi. The income requirements is probably something we'd need a cosponsor for, which I can get. Since I have been abroad I haven't been working, I am currently looking, but is it a good idea to wait until I find a job to apply? I am also concerned about listing addresses correctly, as Vietnamese and Japanese addresses sometimes seem vague on what should go in town, province, etc.

Don't need a lawyer but your Embassy is very very hard on K-1s. Look to your regional forum here on VJ for others' experiences. Front loading your petition is a requirement.

I think hiring a lawyer is a waste of money! You should be able to complete the entire process on your own, with guidance from this forum. I did it, and you can too. Read through the K1 guide here; follow every step and everything. Post your questions or problems about filling out the forms or about how to understand the form items correctly here; this forum will guide you all the way. When I started my petition, I had no idea of anything! VJ guided me all the way through it. The posters here are polite, knowledgeable and willing to spend the time with each other. Good Luck with your journey...

The interview with be in HCMC, not Hanoi. Read the VN forum, and strap in. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.
