Does anyone know when I should change the name on my passport to my new married name? We just filed adjustment of status with my new name and got a name change on my SSN number. I'm just wondering in how to go about changing my ID's. Also what about a new drivers license? Should I change my Canadian one or do I wait till I can register for a new state license.

I changed my license on the way back from my wedding and did my passport the next day. I wanted the passport to be updated so that my green card would have my married name on it and didn't want to cause any delays or hiccups.

You will have to wait for your EAD to get a license in your state. You are no longer a resident of Canada and they won't let you change that license. I would wait for the next time you're in Canada to change your passport.

Ok so once I have the state license will the Canadian government use that to change my passport? They won't require a Canadian driver's license to make the name change I take it.

Looks like you filed for spouse visa. I went the fiancé visa route so I couldn't leave the U.S. once I got married to do what you did.

You will be showing them your marriage certificate for assuming a new last name I believe.

You can call in to change your name on your SIN card as well. They did mine over the phone. Not sure if they send a new card to a new address in the U.S. or if you still have access to mail where you used to live? Just throwing ideas out there.

Yah I still have access to my old address. I'll look into changing my SIN number for sure.

They never require a driver's license for a passport. Also you won't be "changing" your passport so much as getting a whole new one.

They'll need your marriage certificate. But because you're applying for a new passport (you cannot do a simplified renew) you need a guarantor. It's easiest to do this in Canada (and cheaper too, even with expedited processing.)

Keep in mind you don't have to change your passport until it renews if you don't want to. Any travel that you book out of the the USA, however, should be in passport name. You would also bring your marriage certificate to verify your identity with the CBP if the green card is in married name.

You'll also need your proof of citizenship (birth certificate or citizenship certificate) plus at least another piece of ID in your new (married) name (look up the form, acceptable documents are listed under "docs to support your identity").

Your SIN is yours for life and cards are no longer issued, just a simple letter. Edited by La Souris

Ok this makes sense. My passport was just renewed too.

Ok great thanks!

I waited until mine was up for renewal (a year or 2 I think) and then did the name change (using marriage cert).....there was a Cdn passport office close to my parents so I went in and did it in person. Easy peasey....I recently renewed it again (yay for 10 yrs).

While I changed my name with the Cdn government and the bank, I didn't change my name with every other Cdn institution(i.e. SIN) since I didn't see the point. If at some time I return to Canada to live I'll deal with it then.
