Hi folks,

My husband and I are both citizens. My parents will immigrate from Colombia (greencard holders) to live with us, don't speak english, no income, they will take care takes care of the baby while we both work full time. We make too much money to qualify for subsidies under ACA.

I am wondering if I can refuse to claim my parents as pendent, have them file as a couple with $0 income. Would that qualify them for subsidized insurance under ACA? I will lose 2 deductions from claiming them as dependents, but I am guessing it would be a net saving if they qualify for cheap health insurance. Am I off on that?

Any advise and input would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

From my understanding you have to make at least $11,670 to qualify for subsidies. So if you truly have no income (according to Obamacare) you should be able to get medicaid. Your parents as immigrants can not. Obamacare also has Catastrophic health plans but you need to be under age 30. So thats a no go also...Obamacare does not help non-dependents with no income.

The only thing I can say is if you add them to your household you will be a total of 4 not 2. You may qualify based on that. https://www.healthcare.gov/lower-costs/qualifying-for-lower-costs/ (for a family of two it appears you get subsdies if you have income between 22 and 63K- for a family of 4 its different)

Estimated 2016 household income: Savings programs you may qualify for: Below $33,465

Free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid based on income alone. Next steps.

$33,465 - $60,625

A Marketplace health plan with lower monthly premiums plus savings on out-of-pocket costs, like deductibles and copayments. Next steps.

$60,626 - $97,000

A Marketplace health plan with lower monthly premiums. Next steps.

Above $97,000

You won't qualify for savings on a Marketplace insurance plan. You can buy insurance through the Marketplace at full price, or buy from other sources.

Next steps
