Hi All,

I Love Visa Journey! It was my lifeline when my husband was filing to come join me here. Glad to be back among friends.

This may have been answered already, so I'm sorry, but I was wondering, if my husband's parents from Mexico want to visit us for a month, do we have to fill out paperwork here for them or do they do everything there in Mexico?

I'm a US Citizen and my husband is a permanent resident.

I saw a post that said that relatives out of the US have to apply "on their own merit," so I didn't know if that meant they have to do everything paperwork wise there too.

Many Thanks!

You don't have to do anything. They apply on their own in Mexico and have to provide ties, finances, etc. as they would if they didn't have you and your husband in the US.

Good luck!

the process in many countries is almost done online....applicants often pay for their visa application fee through a specific site, get a # to call for an appointment and fill out the application online or at a kiosk....some still use pen and ink, but in 99% of cases, it's the applicants who pretty much do all of the work.

Input from relatives is mostly window dressing.

They (your in-laws) will have to prove to the satisfaction of the US consular official at the interviewing US embassy/consulate, that they have significant ties to Mexico such that they would return to Mexico after their US visit is completed. Such ties could include, property, house ownership, current stable employment, etc. Each visitor visa applicant is presumed to have immigration intent, and must prove that they are not trying to immigrate to the US. A letter from a doctor, any documents from you, or any other invitation-type letter would likely have no positive effect on the visitor visa approval.

Good luck.

"On their own merit" simply means that there is no such thing as a tourist visa petition. Having family or friends in the U.S. does not qualify anyone any more or less for a tourist visa, they apply on their own. Whether their plan is to spend a magical weekend at Disneyland, go bird watching in Florida, visit their uncle in Idaho or drink way too many hurricanes in New Orleans, the COs really only care about two things: 1. They'll go home after their trip, and 2. They won't be working illegally.

Just another thing to keep in mind as well, If there are any doubts in your mind about their ability to prove strong ties to their country with the ability to show the intent to return home, the doubts will probably be even stronger by the CO interviewing them for their B1/B2 visa, it is very often 99.99999% easier for you and your husband to plan a trip to go to Mexico and visit them. Since US Passport holders, and Green Card holders (granted he still has a valid mexico passport) do not need a Visa to go to Mexico.
