He said "jumping off a building" and you turned it into something that fits your point of view. I can think of several ways to jump off a building that requires little to no effort.

And I think you're right, there probably are more suicides by gun but again, not the point.

So what's the point then?

Toddlers as young as 2 years old have killed people.

this is dumb - effectiveness? now guns aren't effective? doesn't availability come into play when discussing effectiveness?

guns = easy, they're everywhere!

bombs = bit more planning/longer shopping list

planes = bit more planning/bit more skill/much longer timeline (due to planning)

a suicidal person with no access to a gun has a longer life expectancy than a suicidal person with access to a gun. it's pretty simple. anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

Not in Japan or S Korea it seems. They get the job done very well without them

Japan Japan has long had one of the world’s most restrictive national gun-control policies. The Council on Foreign Relations reports that, “Gun-control advocates regularly cite Japan’s highly restrictive firearm regulations in tandem with its extraordinarily low gun homicide rate.” This is true. Because most guns are illegal in Japan and gun-ownership rates are extremely low, the country has the lowest gun-homicide rate in the world at one in 10 million. According to Vox’s theory, Japan should have a similarly low suicide rate — but that’s not what you see at all. Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, nearly twice the U.S. rate. Just last month, the BBC reported that nearly 25,000 Japanese took their own lives in 2014 alone, more than 70 people every day. The scarcity of firearms in Japan has not prevented an extremely high occurrence of suicide. South Korea South Korea has gun-control laws so strict almost all guns are illegal; the few available hunting rifles must be “stored at police stations” when not in use. Handguns are practically non-existent and “advertising guns or ammunition is banned.” But while shooting incidents “are rare,” South Korea has the highest suicide rate in the developed world according to the World Health Organization. As in Japan, social and cultural factors are probably to blame: 14-hour days in the classroom with relentless pressure to ace exams, a “higher percentage of stressed out kids than in any of the 30 other developed nations,” and expectations of success made more difficult to meet in moribund economic times. Guns are certainly not a factor in the suicide rate. Along with hanging, drowning, and jumping off of buildings, ingesting pesticides was the method of choice for nearly 25 percent of South Korean suicides between 2006 and 2010. In 2012, more than 14,000 South Koreans took their own lives. Gun-control is not a causal factor in reducing suicide rates. According to the data compiled by the World Health Organization, the story is much the same elsewhere: Developed Western nations such as Hungary, Poland, France, Belgium, and Austria all have higher suicide rates than the United States — and all have stricter gun-control regimes. As much as Ezra Klein and Vox want to use suicide rates as a tool to attack American’s Second Amendment rights, the data don’t support their case.

Maybe so. But I think the question would be if a person wanted to kill themselves, would they if there wasn't a gun in the house. Gun owners say yes. Just like they say a massacre would still go down if guns weren't involved. And yet guns are the number one thing used in massacres...

But yet South Korea has a suicide rate more than double that of the US, but has very strict gun control.

Yup got to be the guns that are causing it

Well, we can always look at Australia...

If that's true, why are guns used in a majority of massacres?

You mean like the WTC and Oklahoma city attacks.

Those are two instances. We can add them up and put gun deaths/suicides numbers against them if you like.

we can talk suicide deaths in countries with strict gun control if you like. Oh wait, that is the topic.

Fine, what's the suicide rate in Australia? Or are we framing this to countries where the gun is the least used?

I don't believe anyone is saying that guns are the sole factor in suicide rates. Guns just make committing suicide quicker and easier. Just like crime rates, there are many factors that go into suicide rates. Guns are simply the tool used to make the task at hand easier because they are the most efficient at getting the job done.

like the article lib just posted, the extreme pressure i guess. i'm not arguing that if there were no guns, there would be no suicide because that is dumb. just like arguing that gun availability has nothing to do with ease of offing oneself.

Guns are great!
