Hi,

I just received my conditional permanent resident card (Green Card) about a week ago. I applied for Adjustment of status based on a K1 Visa.

I want to know the benefits of having this Card. Please help me answer the following questions:

Note: I have a Syrian Passport and a Green Card now

1. Can I travel to Europe specifically to Germany using the Green Card? or I will need to apply for a visa from Germany even though I have Green Card? I just want to go their for few weeks to visit my family

2. Can I get a temporary Passport to use while traveling instead of carrying the Green card? or I have to carry the green card itself and show it to border

Your greencard is only good for living in the U.S. .it mean nothing outside the U.S.

you'll need to apply for visa to go to Germany. And you need to carry tour green card there's no such thing as "temporary passport" those only exist for US citizen meant to use for emergency eg passport stolen/lost overseas

You will need to follow the German immigration rules relative to a Syrian citizen if you want to travel there. As stated, US passports are only for US citizens, but the German visa application process may allow for an easier application if you are a US GC holder, but I don't know. For international travel, you will need to use your Syrian passport, but the GC will be used for re-entry into the US.

The benefits of the green card is to live and work in the US. For things outside the US, the green card is useless.

1. No, your green card is not sufficient for you to travel anywhere outside the US except Mexico and Canada. For Germany (or Europe), you will need a visitor visa since you are a Syrian citizen and passport holder.

2. You do not qualify for a US passport. You travel under your Syrian passport and all the restrictions that applies to it.

The Green Card will only let you change flights in most of the European countries without the need for transit visa. But you can't leave the transit area in the airport otherwise you have to apply for a tourist visa to enter the country.

The immigration process caused me PTSD.

I thought you could get into Switzerland?

Out of USA you need to have Schengen Visa as Germany is part of Schengen Group and this type of visa will be in issued in connection with your Syrian passport . Coming back to USA- you need to have with you Green Card to enter USA. In Europe there are no more "transit visas" due to Schengen. I don't think your GG will help you to get quicker Schengen Visa - this time is gone. For Schengen visa you need to contact German Embassy nearest to your place of residence , you can just call and get info over the phone how to apply for Schengen visa with Syrian passport, being resident in USA. No worry, its easy. Good luck!

Schengen is in a state of flux, expect big changes.
