I had my International Driver's License from the Philippines which is set to expire on November 2016 (Next year). I came here under a K1 Visa. Until when can I use it? Am I required to have a FL DL? I've checked on Florida's DMV site and I'm still not certain... Can I drive as long as I have insurance then my international lic from the Philippines. I'm still processing my AOS and I think it will take awhile (months) for me to get approved...

Yeah you need a local DL. Most states only allow you to use the international one for 30 or max 90 days.

Even if the license says it expires in Nov 2016, once you're here it's only valid for 90 days. Some states don't even recognize them as a valid DL. And since you're not here on vacation but to immigrate you need a FL DL. International DL are more for tourists. Same with your insurance: it's a travel insurance not a "move abroad" insurance.

Did you apply for your work permit with your AOS? Then you can get your DL with your EAD.

It is a Permit not a License.

Just a translation.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It's still called an International Driver's License.

Useless without the underlying License.

Not a DL and not needed if you licence is in English.

Sounds like you are confused and are posting on the wrong thread?

Hey Bankduchess,

I recently posted about this in the UK forum but I checked with the DMV in Florida and got the answer straight from the Supervisor on site while I was there recently to renew my registration.

In FL you can drive as a VISITOR up to a year on your international driver's license. However, you MUST get a Florida DL within 30 days of becoming a resident of the state. According to the supervisor that I spoke with, they advised you can get your FL DL with your I-94 documentation but the license they give you will expire the same date as your K1 visa. They said it would be best to get your license with your EAD since that confirms for them that you are a legal resident. They also clarified that as long as you are added to your SO's insurance plan you can drive here with your International DL until you receive your EAD. The supervisor actually recommended to just wait for the EAD to get it to save yourself some extra cash.

When you go to get your FL DL you will have to take the vision, written, and road test before you will be given the DL. If you go to the FL DMV website you can find study materials for the driving laws in Florida. The vision test is very simple and takes less than 30 seconds. The road test is pretty simple too depending on where in FL you live since most of it has no hills or anything to test you on.

Hope this helps clarify!

You do not need a Permit if you are from the UK, did you get the other stuff in writing?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
