My now wife already had a social security card with her maiden name on. We got married and went back to s.s. office (with marriage certificate) to change her last name. The lady working there told us that she found my wifes informtion but that she couldnt change her name because the her file with the department of home lnd security still shows her maiden name. She said that we needed to file for adjustment status, so once the department of home land secuity update her file (changed her last name to mine) she would then be able to change it on the s.s card since it would match at that point.

the question is... is that true or was she wrong. I feel as if she could have changed it. Has anyone been through this

Thanks in advanced

They always checking your info with the info homeland security has, so I guess they were right.. Before they can confirm and save changes information must match with what they have in the system. When I was doing my SS, one guy couldn't get his SS because homeland had wrong date of birth (and lady had to enter the one she had on his ID)
