would a gofundme somehow mess up my fiancee's chances of an AOS?

Personally it disgusts me to see gfm accounts for anything and everything. Instead of setting one up, are you having a wedding? Why not put on your invitation "donations in lieu of gifts greatly appreciated". Personally, if you cannot afford it or don't have people to help, save until you do. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh.

I saw a gfm account for people wanting the cost of their $50k wedding and immigration covered. Ridiculous!

It's just not the way I was raised. You want something you work for it. You save your money. Handouts were only if you were seriously in trouble like medical needs, father lost his job, etc. If you don't have the money for something then you don't do it. You can't afford a $50,000 wedding then you go to the courthouse.

I'm not judging anyone. Do you. It's just not for me.

Oh! I had no idea about the overstay thing. That makes me feel a bit better now, and I might not put up that gofundme then. I had no idea there was some leeway.

Thanks! I appreciate your help and kindness in this whole discussion! :)

Well, if people are stupid enough to give their money away, it's their own decision. Why don't you just call your family or email them and ask for help? It does sound selfish to the average person to be asking for help because you spent your money for Christmas or because of the holidays....

First of all, you don't have to be rude. It was a simple question. Secondly, I have, and they have given all they could. I am using the Christmas money my family put aside for me to pay for it. Thirdly, I didn't spend any money on Christmas presents. No one in my family and none of my friends are getting anything from me because I'm really tight this month. If you must know, I got a hit in my paycheck because I wanted to see my family for the holidays. (I only see them once a year.)

Society has changed a lot in the last few years. I don't know of any of my friends who would ever ask people to give them money for a non-emergency. Borrow, maybe, but donate? Maybe I'm just old school and come from a different generation. I believe in personal responsibility for one own's debts and bills, and if you can't afford it, you wait until you can. Not making a judgement, just a statement...

You are fine. I overstayed 2 years (crazy, I know) until I was able to afford the funds to AOS! If you are that worried, call a lawyer and ask for legal advice. I wouldnt recommend leaving until all the paperwork goes through regardless. Just do not leave the country. Being from Canada, he wont get deported. DO NOT LEAVE THE OUNTRY, get the paperwork ready. Canadian drivers license work in the US and I never had a problem. (If they ask he can say he is visiting his girlfriend). Most insurance companies allow Canadian DL to be added on.

I know it can be tough, but it is better to overstay than do a GFM which I think is ridiculous! That should be used for people with deliberating diseses or who have been through such hard times! Most people wotn find that a necessary thing to donate to as well so it is best if you would ask maybe a family for a loan to do it? I know some kid Josh who had a Russian wife LEFT THE COUNTRY AND WASNT ALLOWED IN and i believe he started a GFM and got like $300.

Exactly. It is YOUR CHOICE to come here and AOS and live with your loved one. If you cant afford to do the paperwork, then go back to Canada until he is able to do it! Canada is not a third world country in where he would be treated cruel ect.

I'm sorry I misinterpreted how long he could stay there, the gofundme was only because I thought I had literally no other option. There really is no reason for people to get upset or mad, I wasn't asking anyone to donate, I was literally just asking if it would hurt our chances, and at the time I had no idea about overstay.

I understand OP says its a joke , however if someone seriously did that

with no great mitigating factors....I would call that low & I would never

contribute to anything like that.....I must say I would see no harm in helping

a person who have fought with attys for many years , they have no way to

get the fee waiver & funds totally depleted

Seems an electronic version of those guys standing at traffic junctions with pieces of cardboard. Not for everyone.

Yes society is changing ALOT. Large decline in personal responsibility and accountability. Not much patience pr perseverance.

Christ, there are a lot of judgmental people on here, as usual. If you don't like the idea of donating to people's gofundme campaigns... don't do it! I set one up for when I had tuition due and I had had a huge car repair bill which pretty much wiped out my tuition savings. I wasn't going to drop out of school, and a number of my friends and family said they'd be glad to chip in when they found out what had happened. I started a gofundme, posted a link on my Facebook page, and those people who truly wanted to help out gave what they could. They felt good about it, I was grateful (and humbled to know how many people cared) and I could start the next term on time.

This wasn't a life or death situation. It was my choice to be in school. However having to drop out for a term would have been a major inconvenience, and I had people around me who wanted to help. This is roughly analogous to the OP's situation. OP, you do you. You're what they call "temporarily embarrassed" -- it happens. Sometimes you find yourself in a pickle that only money can fix, and if there are people willing to help you for the sheer pleasure of helping, so be it.

So did you take a 6 month holiday?
