its probably just a handful of christian parents who are worried that by their children writing a islamic passage or whatever in arabic (which has always been a normal part of world religious studies) that their brains will be consumed with isis and their precious sunbeams will no longer love jesus.

these are people who should not send their children to secular public schools.

This brand of xenophobic hysteria is not new. I recall when the same sort of hyperventilating emotional response was in vogue about whether children should be reading the Harry Potter books. More than one faction of religious crazies were exasperatingly annoying with their public warnings about kids turning to the dark side because of exposure to 'magic': Same crazies; different vector of fear.

wow. come on man. are you saying that us school children don't learn about the confederacy? you're reaching, trying to put some sort of danger into the act of learning. the man who wrote the op ed that started the entire paranoia fest has made a name for himself in creating fear of persecution in christians. it's as simple as this, if you don't want your children educated in a secular manner - send them to religious school. that is the only way you're going to make sure they don't learn anything about other religions, cultures, history..science (but that's another issue..)

Like I said before, taking a religion course, we had to study up on Islam as well. Even the most devout Christians tend to know about other faiths.

i want to know why it's important to others, from what i can tell of the outrage - the christian parents think that the act of writing a passage can have magical, mind warping effects..makes zero sense to me.
