Star Wars VII (no spoilers)

So I went to this last night.. the first showings were at 7:00pm. I was going to the second showings at 10:00pm - the 7:00pm and 10:00pm showings were both on five screens in my local theater so it was a pretty good crowd. Lots of people dressed up, people having fun in line getting ready to see the movie. A party atmosphere.

The first hint of what we might expect happened when the theaters for the first set of showings let out. No smiles, nobody talking about how great it was but nobody talking about how terrible it was either... They were just walking out.

They let our line in and we wet into the theater and sat in our seats. I went to go get a drink and there was a total of maybe four of us getting anything from the concessions stand - very weird for having five movies starting pretty much simultaneously.. People doing last minute bathroom runs from our theater were literally running when they hit the end of the seats to be gone as little time as possible. People were laughing and making jokes and enjoying the atmosphere.

The lights go down and the previews start.. Independence Day 2, Captain America 3, etc, etc. There was one preview that was very long about two women and a love story that really didn't fit in with rest and people were chanting "Start the movie! Start the movie!" The Lucasfilm logo goes up and everyone is clapping and cheering.. Several times during the movie people openly cheer - the first time the Millennium Falcon is seen, the first time Han Solo is seen, etc, etc...

We all watch the entire movie.. Then it ends.. there is a delay of a few seconds then 4-5 people half heartedly clap that ends after a few seconds and everyone exits the theater without bothering to sit through the end credits. Nobody is talking - in the bathroom there were several older men talking with their pre-teen sons while waiting in the after-movie pee line. I can hear them talking "Yeah dad... I liked it."

That was about the span of comments I heard - nobody hated it but nobody was exactly jubilant afterwards either. That is how I felt as well. While driving home I started dissecting the movie in my head and I have a lot more complaints. I won't list them here as it would be a list of spoilers.. I went online to rotten tomatoes and have been flabbergasted at overwhelming ratings and reviews from critics and moviegoers. Maybe when the fanboys are done in a week and have time to think back on it we will see...

my kid is pretty excited about it and he's disappointed that i'm not. i bought into the hype with phantom menace - i know i saw all the prequels but i can't say i remember anything specific from any of them except that i found them boring and not good. i think going forward i'm just going to stick with the OG three, and the ewok movie. that was always my favorite anyway..

i have to say, i'm really seriously put off from new movies anymore. everything is a remake it seems. point break? i mean come on. why?

i did see krampus with my son last weekend, it was actually good and entertaining.

From what I've seen it's gotten 97% certified fresh on RT. I'm going to wait until the hype dies down before I see it.

Krampus was very good. Saw a Christmas Horror Story and between the two I'd roll with Krampus.

towards the end of krampus i was really worried they would screw the ending all up..but the ending was perfect.

We were too, but they did it just right. I had to wiki it to see who was right, me or Janelle in the interpretation of what happened in the end.
