Foremost, i really appreciate the input. This website has a lot of useful information, but i need to clarify this confusion:

My mom[uS Citizen] had applied I-130 for my dad a while back. Now his visa interview is scheduled in the upcoming month.

My question is, my mom does not work and hence does not have the financial backing or financial documentations to be the primary sponsor in I-864.

Should i [also a US citizen] be filing I-864A or I-864 with my financial documents as a joint sponsor? I have my 1040s as well as W-2 for the last 3 years.

Also, what other documentations should i be submitting alongside with my mom? We live in the same household. is there a list of acceptable documentation to verify the household?

Thanks in advance.

How was his visa interview scheduled before the I-864 documents were sent to NVC?

Yes, you should be completing an I-864 or I-864A. You can provide your most recent IRS tax transcript OR federal tax return + W2. It's best to also include proof of ongoing income, most recent pay stubs, employment letter etc. You'll need to provide evidence of your legal status as well (US passport etc.)

If you complete an I864 as a joint sponsor, it's not necessary to prove that you live in the same household.

If you decide to complete an I864A instead -- you would provide the same financial evidence and for relationship proof:

Proof of relationship If you completed Form I-864A, submit evidence that proves your relationship to the sponsor (the person who filed Form I-864). You can prove your relationship by submitting a photocopy of one of the documents below:

  • Birth certificate;
  • Marriage certificate;
  • Adoption certificate;
  • The petitioner or joint sponsor’s most recent Federal Income Tax Returns, if you are listed as a dependent; or
  • A signed, written statement describing the relationship.
