Tax transcripts vs 1040

I am working on my AOS and the NVC Process Wiki recommends tax transcripts over 1040s. Specifically it says:

^^You have two choices here of what to send in:

- Tax return transcripts ordered from IRS (preferred by NVC and of most consulates/embassies) RECOMMENDED

OR

- Tax returns (1040), W2s, 1099s, and any other schedules/worksheets (if applicable)

I have two questions about this:

Does anyone have experience successfully using the 1040 instead of tax transcripts?

If you requested tax transcripts how long did it take to get them once you requested them?

Thanks!

I walked into IRS office and had them the same day

Even my small city has IRS office

The girl did say she could only give me one copy of each year a day, so i told her i would return the next day for a copy for myself and she printed out 2 of each for me

Transcripts are always worth more than the 1040. This is because the transcripts PROVE that you filed your taxes - as the information comes directly from the IRS.

You may submit your 1040 instead, but you MUST also include all the documents that PROVE your income, including (but maybe not limited to) the sponsor's W-2, 1099 (for interest income), 1098 (for dividend income), and any schedules (like Rent or Royalty income) that were submitted with the 1040. For some people (like me), the 1040 complete packet is almost 100 pages long. And, just including the 1040 doesn't PROVE that is what you actually sent to the IRS.

So try to get the transcripts instead!

Good luck!

I used the 1040 instead of tax transcripts - it was fine. I think the NVC and consulates/embassies prefer them for clarity's sake. For example, my joint sponsor was self-employed and she just gave me her 1040s and 1099s which amounted to 2-inch thick documentation.

If I were you though, I'd get the transcripts just to be on the safe side. They take about a week to be delivered.

Can I use my petitioner's 1040 without w2 for 2014 ? I'm using a joint sponsor as my petitioner doesn't meet the requirement in any event.

I've just applied for my petitioner's 2014 tax return transcripts as he (my dad = petitioner) can't find his 2014 w2s.

However, I would like my package delivered before the tax deadline and it's all ready to be posted. Should I go ahead and post without petitioner's w2?

No. You will get a checklist. Wait the week it takes to get the transcripts.

Thank you.

If we don't find the 2014 w2 I'll wait for the transcripts.

Is it the tax Return Transcript or the Tax Account Transcript that's preferred?
