What happens at the border crossing into the US? My fiance was turned away in November 2005, before the processing of our visa began, because of a mis-undestanding of ours. They said he did not have enough ties to Canada, and to come back when his visa was issued.

Do you think he will have a hard time crossing?

You'll be fine. You'll be crossing with a visa! Many people have been turned back for lack of ties. But this time, there'll be no misunderstandings.

No! They were turned back before the visa Many people have been turned back earlier, but once they have the visa, there should be no problem.

My husband was turned away once BEFORE the visa was issued. He had no problems crossing after he got the K-1 visa

This seems to be pretty common from what I've read. We were told 3 different times that Thomas could come for a period of 6 months to begin our visa application. THEN someone told us that once the K-1 processing had begun, we werent even allowed to see eachother until it was done! (No visits or anything)

They even told Thomas at the border that if he tried to cross again without his K-1 that he would be banned from the US for 10 years.

It was a very scary time.

When it comes to crossing the Border, experiences vary. it pretty much comes down tothe POE officer. I traveleld monthly to DC while ourt visa process was ongoing and never had a problem, while others get hassled, but are stil succcessful and while others get denied!

Hi TntLetourneau,

Good luck on your immigration journey. In answer to your question about the initial POE crossing of the border by land, based on our experience (as also quoted on my VJ timeline) it was:

"Believe us, being harrassed at the border for 2 hours is "not a picnic in the park"."

Likewise, there were some misunderstandings and on my end not having enough ties to Canada. Hence, they made me get a Visitor's Visa for my visit to the USA, even though due to the VWP, Canada is exempt from Visitor's Visas for short trips. Oh well, I proved them wrong unintentionally, as what originally was a two week vacation visit to the USA ended up being a lifetime here in the USA...

As for other times I've crossed the border (after I got my Green Card) from the USA to Canada, I had no problems. I was in and out in 10 minutes on both ends...

A rule of thumb for your situation, and for any other people's situations: Have all your paperwork ready, and your explaination/story straight and well thought out....

Ah, my husband got turned away for not having enough ties to Canada, too. Twice! This was pre-visa. It's all good once you have that visa.
