Hi all,

I have a little bit confusing here.

My first SSN is from my OPT 3 years ago and started working on this SSN for over 3 year. I have applied for AOS and I have not re-applied for my new SSN yet since I received my new EAD via AOS process.

My question is once I got my Green Card approval, I will have the same SSN like mine from OPT or they will assign a new SSN for me.

Please help to give me your advice, I really appreciate for your help to clear out my confusing here.

They don't assign SSNs. You have to apply for one. Since you already have one, you don't need to re-apply.

All you have to do is go to the social security office and advise them of the change in your status.

Thank guys for your advice!

I had 3 year tax return and my taxpayer told me my SSN looks weird number, not like normal people and I even can't check my credit scores with my current SSN, so I guess I gonna has a new one but now I know the number will be the same. Just need to remove the restriction "only valid..."

Thanks

SSNs are SSNs -- no one is any "weirder" than any other; it's just a bunch of digits. Note that if you have something that starts with 9, it's not an SSN, but an ITIN. ITINs are only used for tax filing purposes for people who don't have SSNs. But if you had working authorization (OPT), then you probably got an SSN.

It may be that your tax preparer is used to older SSNs. SSNs used to be assigned based on state of birth. This below links says its for historical purposes because the SSA doesn't issue SSNs by state anymore. There's no meaning to a SSN now. If your tax preparer only sees local people who have never moved, they could be used to seeing the same first 3 numbers (prefix) from the old days.

Thanks for your suggest,

I have 3 credit card by Bank of America, Chase and Well-fargo and all three had the limit from $5,000 to 10,000 and they do not let me know my credit score. I used the credit Karma but they ask for green card and some stuff.

the ssn will not change.

the logged status of you will change, back at SSA, when you show up with your green card and ask them to log your change of status/reason of authorized stay.

I'd be more worried about filing taxes after OPT expired - you were supposed to go home after OPT ended.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
