We'll be going through Detroit, MI as POE.

Can anyone give me an idea how long it may take my husband to get through the process? Do they take immigrants aside for an interview? Our layover is about 4 hours.

Our kids and I will be travelling all together with him since we all live abroad (Brazil), but he will be the only one entering as an immigrant.

I am not sure how busy Detroit is as a POE.

Thanks!

He will be taken to secondary inspection for further processing. If there is no crowd in the secondary location he should be out within minutes. Nothing to worry about.

I have been going through Detroit, not as an immigrant, with EAD, but anyway the secondary inspection was a must. I don't know if they were really busy at that time, but everything was going so slow!!! I had a big delay in Paris, so when I finally landed in Detroit, I have already known I have missed my next flight, from Detroit. It took almost two hours to go through customs and secondary. Besides, when I got my luggage, after all of this, I was stopped twice on my way to the gate for the next flight , for checking my suitcases... I'm pretty sure even if I didn't have a delay in Paris and landed on time, I would have missed the flight from Detroit anyway..

My parents visited me in September of this year. Detroit was as POE. The same thing with luggage (everybody wanted to look at/in) and it also took "forever" to go through customs (no secondary on B1/B2 visa). Their layover was about 3 hours. They barely made the boarding for the next flight.

When I entered the US as a K1 visa holder, my POE was Minneapolis, MN. It took 40 minutes for everything - customs, secondary... and cat :)

Maybe, it was just my bad luck, in Detroit, and my parents'... Although, few days ago I read here, on VJ, that somebody has experienced the long process in Detroit also.

You mentioned your layover is about 4 hours. Should be enough anyway, even if nobody is in hurry there.. Just be ready sometimes POE is unpredictable ...

Hopefully, everything will go smooth and fast for your husband. Good luck!!!

We did POE in Atlanta with about a dozen people in line ahead of us for the secondary processing. The entire process, including rechecking our bags took about 90 minutes. Our layover was about three hours. The process may take longer now due to increased security concerns.

Good luck.

Detroit was my POE in June with my CR-1. It was quick and easy and the officers were really polite. If you have a 4 hour layover you will be fine.

Good luck.

My wife came via JFK during January. Apparently everyone in the known world was immigrating that day to, so her total time was like 4 hours. :P

That is one of my biggest concerns - that people will wait until after the new year to move. But we are going towards the end of Jan. and I picked DTW over ATL because I am hoping it will be less crazy than ATL as a POE (or JFK, for that matter!). That and we are using FF miles, so it was 20K miles less per ticket to go through DTW vs ATL (that adds up over 6 tickets!).

My POE was in Atlanta.. Since the officers took my papers in, I waited no more than 30 mins, and talked with the officer for no more than ten minutes. So, it will all depend of how many people are before you.. I had like 3 families..

My POE was Boston. Secondary is usually busy but on that day there was nobody there. I was seen straight away. I had to sign a form in 2 places and put one fingerprint in 2 places. They stamped my visa and that was it. It only took a few minutes. So I guess the length of time the process takes depends on how busy it is at secondary.
