Incorrect name on file

So I recently entered the US on my K-1 visa, and I applied for my Social Security Number a few days ago. When applying for my SSN, the person helping me told me that my name was incorrect on their records. They had my first and last name both as my first name, with no middle name. They didn't offer too much help, except telling me to make sure I get it fixed.

How do I get this fixed?

Many thanks!

You need to go through your files to find where the mistake first occurred. Check your visa stamp, etc..

What does your I-94 say? Does it match your visa?

I believe that your first and middle names are both considered 'given names' so they may be on the same line?

Everything says the same thing, so it's hard to tell. As Amhara says below, my first and last name are always called "Given Names" and are on the same line.

This is right. Everything has my first and last name as my 'Given Names'. They are both on the same line.

Gosh, I'm not sure why they would have told this to you. I'm assuming you included your full middle name on your Form SS-5, correct?

This is the only thing I found:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211140

"a. Name on DHS Document

Select the name that appears on the I-94 from the drop-down menu."
If your middle name appears on your I-94 and the Form SS-5, then why deny?

Hmm, yes it's very strange. Although the person helping me was absolutely positive that this was an issue.

Yep my SS-5 included my correct full name.

The database is populated by a scan of your passport. Could be that a glitch ran two fields together. Maybe the part at the bottom didn't get the <<<< right. Maybe wrong encoding that didn't scan properly?

USCIS/Homeland Security would have to verify your entry and correct the name. SSA can't do anything if they don't find the exact name match. They can request a manual verify. Or you would have to wait until USCIS changes your status as EAD Issued, or greencard granted, which would hopefully have your name manually entered correctly when you move to a status beyond K1 visa entrant.

eh - SSA clerk looked you up in SAVE database, to check your status.

Your name is wrong in the SAVE database.

How to fix? Go into any CBP office (airport or secondary inspection office), get the shift supervisor,

and have them change it there in real time. Don't leave until it's changed.

Then wait a week, go back to SSA office, and try it again.

If SSA office sent out your file for DHS verification, don't sweat it - nothing will happen during the I-94 period to get the name corrected by that SSA office request - you must go, in person, to a CBP office.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Ah so that's why the clerk gave me the address of the "INS New York City Naturalisation Office" and wrote "Save Computer" on it?? He didn't really explain that to me properly.

So I need to go to a CBP office? How about the "INS New York City Naturalisation Office" I was given the address for?

Is it possible to do this at this CPB office?

uh, no.

CBP office, not INS office.

we've a lot of acronyms out there (welcome to the USA!) but remember -

your SAVE db record can only be fixed by a human at a CBP office. I suggest you find out the CBP offices in your area.

no, as that is not an inspection office, or even a secondary inspection office. You're on the right track though, keep digging ! Hint: Primary Inspection offices are at airports, secondary inspection offices are not.

Note - I call em 'secondary inspection' offices, where in fact, they be called 'deferred inspection' offices.

See http://www.cbp.gov/document/guidance/deferred-inspection-sites and suck over the excel spreadsheet that contains the office listings. It's free, from a PC !

I had almost the same situation except they put my second name in my middle name. I had it corrected with the local USCIS and SSA.
