If there is a more tone deaf former athlete than Pete Rose, you’d have to let me know who it is.

MLB on Monday announced that Rose’s appeal to be reinstated by the league was denied. Rose, 74, was appealing a ban that was issued against him in 1989 for betting on baseball games while managing the Cincinnati Reds, including games of his own team. He continued to deny for years that he bet on baseball, but he finally admitted in his book 15 years later that he did wager on games, compromising the integrity of the sport.

If Rose really wanted to be reinstated by baseball, you’d figure he would take every step possible to ensure he would have good standing at his meeting. But when he met with new commissioner Rob Manfred, Rose admitted to continually betting on sports including baseball.

Rose just cannot seem to get out of his own way and executes incredibly poor judgment every step of the way. It’s almost like he intentionally sabotages his chances of getting reinstated. Remember last year when it was reported he failed to follow Bud Selig’s plan for reinstatement? The guy says he want to be reinstated, but he fails to deliver, making one wonder how badly he wants it.

Yes, the Hit King was a great player — one of the best ever — and his accomplishments are worthy of recognition in the Hall of Fame, but he is a horrible representative of the game of baseball in terms of personal character, and the ban is well deserved

Agree with the above conclusions.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I'm not sure if he is a horrible representative of the game of baseball. Doc Gooden was never banned, neither were Manny or A-Rod or the whole list of guys suspended for drugs. Mikey Mantle and Willie Mays were banned in 1983 for working in a casino.

They changed the rules for Rose...twice.

How about this guy? He might be considered a horrible representative of football...

Mays and Mantle were banned , not as players but as managers and Kuhn left the door open for them to return, if they disassociated themselves from the casino jobs.

I'm not seeing how betting on baseball now is an issue. The issue was betting while in the game...he is out of the game.

I agree with that. I also think betting on baseball while a player or manager should trigger a ban against playing or managing or anything that could actively influence the games. The reasoning behind keeping players out of the hall of fame doesn't make sense.

The commissioner banning him from the hall of fame is dumb. They have petty sports writers to take care of that.

Did he bet on his own team to lose? That would be a problem.. If he bet of himself and his team to win well that is just extra motivation ;) - I'm not really sure why his behavior at 74 and retired matters when judging his tenure in baseball. If he did something so terrible back in the day that he should not be celebrated for his accomplishments then how does anything he does now make that better or worse?

IIRC, he bet for and against his own team at times when he was manager. I understand the ban from baseball because of that, but I think extending that ban to hall of fame admission is unnecessary.

What are your thoughts on the home run slide during the all star game?

Unfortunate I guess. I think Rose played the game all out, and I don't think he had a dialed down setting, even in the all star game. That's why he had a hall of fame career as a first baseman who could only hit singles.

I saw an interview a while ago where Fosse and Rose were talking about it, and they are both surprised that it was a controversy. That was how they played the game back then.
