SS number following Green Card....

I received my green card a few weeks ago, and noticed the birth date was wrong so went for an infopass and got a stamp in my passport before returning the green card to be re-issued. I then applied for a SS number but was told that my application would be sent first to USCIS to be confirmed and then I would receive in about 4 weeks if all was well.

Has anyone else had this happen? I thought they would simply issue me with a SS number. I wasnt aware that USCIS had to do background checks?

USCIS does not have to do background checks in order for the SSA to issue you a SS card. The SSA does have to verify your immigration status with the USCIS.

The same thing happened to me, but my issue was that I was not in the computer system that social security uses to verify immigration status (probably because I didn't have a visa when I entered the US).

Maybe your name in that system has the wrong date of birth listed and you didn't show up in it due to that.

Social security needs to manually verify your immigration status with DHS and then they will process your SS application.

As the others said, they always do that just to verify everything.

Mine took about 4 weeks to come in.
