J1 before CR-1- did I overstay? (split)

This has been stressing me out so please anyone who have any idea pls ill appreciate your help. I dont want to start a new thread cos im afraid to post it on the wrong forum but yeah Ill be having my cr1 interview in Manila this Jan. and i was on my J1 visa before, my visa expired last July 22, 2012 and i was admitted in the Philippines last Aug. 20, 2012. I was informed that we have thirty days grace period after finishing the j1 visa program so i used it to travel but a friend of mine who applied for a tourist visa informed me that he got denied for the reason of overstaying his j1 visa but in fact he was still on his 30 days grace period at that time. Is the 30 days grace period legal or unlawful? Its kind of confusing. Cos i was searching about it and its says that we really do have a thirty days grace period but i was wondering if its like legal or not my program ended well as far as i know.
