Just check it, the temperature will not break it. They don't allow luggage compartments to drop to sub-arctic temperatures. It seems like you are more worried about a half-dead laptop than your own trip.

Hehe the problem is just with the battery, beside that it's a good gaming laptop which cost me a fortune. That's why I'm worried about checking it, but I guess after reading all these comments I'll just do that. I'm gonna back up all my data in an external hard drive, pray nd hope that no one will steal it :s

Always have anything valuable, electronic as carry on.

Well I just contacted TSA support and Air france, they said there won't be any problem, you can plug it in and turn it on if requested. Thanks everyone for your answers.

The only reason they dont want laptops in checked bags is because the lith battery can explode. Since you have no battery i am wondering if you can put it in your checked bag. Temps wont hurt the laptop part or lcd screen

I'm a US citizen and i visited my husband in Nigeria this past February. I was told by the airport officials when i was leaving to return home to make sure my lap top was charged because if it won't turn on they will confiscate it from me. So yes this happens.

My checked bag was stolen from when I traveled overseas in 2011. I'll never know if it happened in Newark, Heathrow or Queen Alia. I checked in my bag at my airport of departure, had a 5 hour and 14 hour layover without needing to pick it up, and didn't see that it had been stolen from until I opened it in my apartment in Amman. Anything of value was gone, and even my coffee, my chocolate and my new pjs were missing! If there's something you're traveling with that you can't imagine losing, keep it with you on your trip.

Quit sressing

never heard of them asking for computer to be turned on

but if they want, they can find a power cord

i know security is getting tighter because of recent events

but this has not happened with anyone i know coming in

They do random checks on flights to the US. Some airports have designated areas for testing electronic devices.

I would say be prepared for anything. With everything going on now, you just never know what TSA has been instructed to do. Even if it's random check, be prepared.

Have the power cord available as to be ready if they ask.

What is this fuzz about? Just put it into checked luggage and you are fine.

Apparently people are worried about it being broken, lost, or stolen from their checked bags. Admittedly, these are both things that never crossed my mind before this.

Also, I did just remember how if the laptop is something you use regularly, in the case of a long flight delay or an voluntary or possibly involuntary "bump", anything in your checked bags will not be with you for the wait, and if you are late to your gate or do not take the flight, may arrive in your destination before you do!

Hello,

I am an American who was living in Morocco for nearly a year. When I came back to the US in May, I had a layover in Madrid and I was asked to turn my laptop on when going through security. Mine has a battery thank goodness. I still wouldn't stress, surely they will let you plug it in. Good luck to you either way. And welcome to the US

If you have checked in then your luggage will never go on a flight that you are not on. If you are late to the gate for what ever reason and your luggage has been placed in the cargo hold, then they will remove it. I've flown many times and this has been the number 1 reason for many flight delays. :)

Interesting, because it has happened to me before.

Had a flight out of Chicago to Tampa, took a bump and offered up my seat to another passenger, and then got a replacement flight to St. Petersburg. My luggage had to be sent from Tampa the St. Petes airport.

Similar thing happened to a family member when they were late to their gate on a connecting flight.

I suppose maybe it's just not 100% effective? I can see how it wouldn't be as usually the luggage is packed away well before everyone is boarded..

Maybe different rules between long haul and domestic flights and different airline policy's but in the past it has held up 3 of my Qantas long haul flights.
