There was a shooting at my daughter's high school this morning

Thanks everyone.. in my haste to write, I neglected to add that the thoughts and prayers should be for the victims and their families, obviously. My daughter seems to be just fine... she even wants to stay after school to participate in the community service club she's involved with. No surprise that she wanted to stay. She loves high school and is a very conscientious student. To get her to stay home when she's sick is even a struggle.

I grew up in NYC. There were security guards at my HS but no metal detectors. I'm sure that's changed. They may be evaluating that here, as the shooter entered the school to inquire about his ex-girlfriend's whereabouts. He had the backpack containing the gun with him. The outcome could have been much worse had she been in the cafeteria as she was supposed to be... But how can you control what happened in the parking lot? So sad for the mother... imagine her guilt at having been the one to bring her there. I can only surmise that she was bringing the daughter to school have having been absent for the morning. Perhaps the mother didn't even know that the bf was going to be there waiting for her...??? No details about that as the police said that they haven't spoken to the mother yet (which I find hard to believe.....)

I remember that now, Caroline.... thanks.... my daughter elected to come home after all. The crime scene was cleared away and cleaned up... we drove right over where it happened. There were plenty of news crews still hovering though.

WOW. I am so happy your daughter is okay and you have a little piece of mind having contacted her. My thougths and prayers are with the families of both the boy and girl. I hope the school brings in some experts to help the student body deal with this. I'm sure many students who witnessed it or were close to these students will be suffereing also. (F)

We're all waiting to hear what made the boy who did the shooting snap the way he did.... we may never know. So tragic. But the girl's condition has been upgraded, so it looks like she's going to make it.

Every day when I drop my daughter off, I tell her, "be safe" which generally means "don't get a paper cut" or "don't choke on your sandwich".... Not "stay out of the way of gunfire". It's surreal.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Some of these kids are going to be more traumatized than others. I just pray that this doesn't give others ideas, if you know what I mean.

I told my 15 yr old daughter.... forget dating when you're 16. You now have to be 45 and certified to carry a concealed weapon...

A weak attempt at humor, but it's SO HARD to let go and "let God"....
