I had a dispute today with someone from another immigration forum.

The third person asked about marriage visa and how does USCIS check bonafide marriage here.

Well, my opponent mentioned not only interview but also the big possibility that USCIS officers will come to the apartment, check if couple resides together, will also ask neighbors ....

I started to argue and said that it's impossible, no one of my friends was checked like this and it looks like a bogeyman story of an immigrant rather than reliable information.

However, my opponent mentioned CIS statistics of visa frauds that were disclosed thanks to these raids.

Here is a question, does anybody else heard that DHS officers can come right to your private territory? Do they have the authority to do it?

whaaaaat....? Omg. I better put like.. some couple things in my trash cause that reminds me of this one movie with um.. I think it was ben affleck marrying a his boss for immigration purposes and something? anyway the interviewing officer when through their trash and they purposely put condoms or something in there LOL

Yes, definitely happens. They come unannounced and count toothbrushes and go through dirty laundry and closets.

It was Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock in The Proposal Though from your description it reminds me more of the movie Chuck and Larry, where two straight guys get married after the one dude's wife dies in order to get insurance or some other benefit. There is a home check scene where the guy tried "gaying up" the trash after they learn an inspector has been digging through it.. Man I watch too many movies.

As for your question OP, yes home visits can and have happened for some people who are at the point in the immigration process where they are proving a bona dude marriage. I wouldn't say they are a "big possibility" as you referred to them in your post, but they are used in cases where there is legitimate suspicion of immigration fraud.

Calling them "raids" is a little heavy though. From what I have heard it's usually just one or two people who stop by and check to see if the couple is really living together or not. A few people have mentioned that the officers asked to look around the house a bit.

As for whether they have the right to do this, it is up to you to let them in or not. Though if you do not, I can't imagine it ending well for you. It's up to you if your privacy is worth a possible denial.

**just a heads up, a lot of the stories you will see posted on here about home visits are many times the worst-case nightmare situations where someone has a bad experience. Not exactly the best representative sample.

well even if we do not have any red flags and our marriage is bonafide I might better keep our hamper full

They generally have an extreme reason to do home visits or to talk to neighbours, friends, or family. It's not generally common but it can and does happen.
