An incorrect quote, given how common mass shootings are vs. other western countries.

Nothing polite about that.

It won't make the news like San Bernadino did. But WHAT IF someone at the Xmas party were to be carrying concealed? Would 14 still be dead? Less perhaps?

On Friday, an Uber driver with a concealed carry permit thwarted an attempted mass shooting by pulling his own weapon and shooting a gunman who had opened fire in Chicago’s Logan Square.

Illinois Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn verified that the driver “had a concealed-carry permit and acted in the defense of himself and others.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, the driver was watching “a group of people” walk in front of his car on North Milwaukee Avenue just before midnight when 22-year-old Everardo Custodio allegedly “began firing into the crowd.” The Uber driver pulled his own gun and “fired six shots at Custodio,” wounding him in “the shin, thigh, and lower back.”

The attempted mass shooting ended with no one other Custodio injured.

So this happened last April, he has already pleaded guilty (in August) and sentenced to prison

Here is the shooter 22 year old Everardo Custodio - I looked all over and have not found any investigation as to what he was planning that day or why he did it - I find that odd, it tends to be the focus on these mass and attempted mass shootings.. We don;t even know what type of gun... Being that he is still alive and went to court there should be *something* - All I could find was that the gun was not legally purchased by him and that he was sentenced to four years and could be paroled as soon as 2018.

Everardo-Custodio-mugshot.jpg

The driver/shooter was not named until there was a blurb about him in the Chicago tribune in November - 47 year old John Hendricks. The only reason his canme came out was because of a story on his gun being confiscated at the time and it taking over six months for police to return it to him.

Also After this incident Uber banned all drivers and passengers from carrying guns while working

Murder rates drop as concealed carry permits soar: report

The number of concealed carry handgun permits has skyrocketed since President Obama was first elected, while murder rates have fallen, according to a new report released Wednesday.

Since 2007, the number of concealed handgun permits has soared from 4.6 million to over 12.8 million, and murder rates have fallen from 5.6 killings per 100,000 people to just 4.2, about a 25 percent drop, according to the report from the Crime Prevention Research Center.

*********

My modest research :

California, home to some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US has experienced almost one quarter of mass shooting incidents since 1986. Colorado and Connecticut, also states with highly restrictive gun laws, have sadly been in the news too. Totals for these three states combined represent just under 35% of all mass shooting incidents in the US since 1986.

Food for thought...

I take you are for guns then?

My question is why all these mass shootings happen in USA compared to other places. I don't know the answer to that but you can't say it has nothing to do with guns being more available. I don't think that guns being present or not has any real effect on anything except that more guns in society means more gun deaths.

Gun ownership by itself does little to fill the gaps in white identity that all these historic changes have chipped away. Simple gun ownership is a private activity, restricted to the home which, after all, is a traditionally female space. Concealed or open carry is a public act, asserting rights and membership in the larger civic world. It is an act that restores to the carrier the role of protector and citizen, roles lost to him not only by the dilution of white power in a multiracial nation but by the corporate takeover of democracy through the neoliberal abandonment of electoral financing laws. A man with a concealed gun in his pocket is a self-deputized protector of the public, and though gun advocates will admit that the chances of actually being a life-saving hero are microscopic, individuals can still imagine that their presence is making the space around them safer because the cumulative effect of millions of carriers is believed to deter crime. Thus, even if they never draw their piece, concealed carriers identify as “protectors” and active important citizens fulfilling a vital role in society. A role as white men they have lost in other ways.

It would be more accurate to say that I am opposed to Nanny State restrictions which erode personal and societal liberties. Too often, these restrictions are inflicted on Citizens without an understanding of the long term consequences. California, Colorado and Connecticut demonstrate one consequence of restricting the rights of Citizens to purchase, own and carry firearms. Pennsylvania, Arizona and Florida, states with considerably less restrictive firearms laws, have not experienced the same level of carnage. Food for thought...

Criminals and terrorists will always have access to firearms; restrictive firearms laws do not restrict their access. The ability of law abiding Citizens to protect themselves in emergent situations is directly proportional to their ability to legally obtain and use firearms. Again, food for thought...

I really dont buy the propaganda put out by the NRA. Perhaps the USA has a unique culture because of its relationship with the gun, but those guys really are on another planet.

No one seems interested in talking about guns being a benefit or hazard for society, only that a good guy might find him or herself in a situation where having a gun will prevent them being robbed and raped by armed villains. Who thinks like this?

None of what I posted was NRA propaganda. Let's see some facts. I'd love to see you provide some statistics to back up your position.

Already said I dont see the point in the numbers game - looking up stats on the internet to prove what you already believe. If you rely on the internet for truth you can make yourself believe anything.

The way some Americans talk about guns makes me think they are still living in the old west, thinking a bear or Indians are going to come over the hill at any moment and kill them. Have a gun just in case, cause you'll really be sorry if you get mugged and get caught with your ####### in your hands

There's a myriad of reasons why we experience the high level of gun violence in this country. The sad thing is, until we address those issues, things will continue to go downhill.

“We find it perplexing that there are people who do not realize that a right may be neither granted nor withdrawn by the State. If the Bill of Rights were repealed, the right to keep and bear arms would still exist, since it was to defend that right that the Constitution was established. (See the Declaration of Independence.) Thus the state may destroy me, but it may not rescind my right to self-defense. This all seems pretty clear, but frequently I find people who do not understand it.” – Jeff Cooper

The "Crime Prevention Resource Center" was founded by John Lott of "more guns, less crime" fame. Shocking that the study cited above concluded that concealed carry permits skyrocketing lowered the US gun death murder rate.

I think we should credit the Obama administration for the drop.
