A booth at the county fair, aiming to win a big ole teddy bear, does not lend credence to one's views on being a responsible gun owner.

That's an indoor shooting range, not a fair. Second, the lady WAS a responsible gun owner. As in used to have a firearm in her home. She doesn't have one now due to living in Hawaii.

If a person has one in their home for protection or if they're an avid hunter, I'm for that. I'm not for the people who carry just so they can "win" the argument or go places they normally wouldn't unarmed just to prove a point.

I can be a target shooter in London if I want to join a gun club, there are rules for this.

Hunting I don't agree with, especially trophy hunting. The only people I think who should legitimately have guns in the home are the farmers.

Self defence? Sounds good on paper but I don't live in a war zone and not interested in creating one.

She grew in in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Memphis, Tennessee. Given some of the stories she's actually worked up the courage to tell me, I can't argue she DIDN'T live in a war zone.

Because when we express opinions we like to discuss them and back them up with facts. If you don't want to, thats fine but I'm not sure why you are wasting your time in this forum if thats the case.

I don't like the whole 'we' thing here, as if I can't say what I think unless I justify it to a consensus of armchair experts. People here talk about facts but they don't seem to know the difference between them and opinion.

How about I do a bit of googling and post a few links and numbers. Would that make me an expert?

Out of my experience I'm afraid but I've seen The Wire so I can imagine. Don't think owning a gun because other people have one so I should too is a very good argument.

Listen, its not about being an expert of anything. This is a forum for the discussion of opinions. If we all state our opinions and then simply respond with a "why?" there won't be any discussion, just people shouting opinions.

I'm not trying to change your perspective, just giving you a different one.

I don't own or carry myself, but I don't knock people who do. If you're a collector or what not, that's your prerogative. What I'm against are the knuckleheads who have guns looking for a confrontation. As we say here, I'm not anti-gun, I'm anti-idiot with a gun.

If the NRA represents gun owners I say there's a lot of idiots out there with guns

I try not to put everyone in the same category. I hate to be generalized, so I don't do this to others. There are people who own and carry responsibly. And then there's the monsters.
