I have scheduled my driving test but on my learner it states visit expires on November 26, my instructor told me they aren't going to take driving test if on leaver it says your visit expires while my learner expiration date is till 2020. Is it true ? Or what are the options available ? Thanks

You need to go to the NY DMV site and find this out or call someone at the local DMV as driver's licenses are state specific. It would appear that New York puts your immigration document expiration date on the license--in this case your I-94 expired on November 26th, I bet. You will need some valid form of ID to prove you are lawfully in the US before the state of New York will issue you a DL--that could be the AP/EAD card or the GC, again check with your state's DMV. Once you get the 2-year GC, I bet your DL will expire when the GC expires. Once you have the 10-year GC this will not be an issue any more. I would just wait for the GC because I do not like waiting in line at the DMV--YMMV.

New York here.

Your options at this point are waiting for the EAD to come in and going into NYSDMV with EAD/SSC/Proof of identity and they will update the "TEMP VISITOR EXPIRES" date to the EAD expiration date.

good luck!

Hi, Just to confirm -

NY State full license holder here.

I filed for a learners permit the day my EAD/ AP card came through and used it as proof at the DMV along with my SSN and various other bits. They were only interested in the EAD card.

Past the theory test there and then, filed for the 5 hour road course - again no problems.

Received my Green card *the day* of my driving test, passed the test (the guy was a real grouch but still passed me) - he only asked me if I had a license in my country of origin (UK), I replied yes... for 13 years. Drove home and got the GC out of the mailbox!

My full license came through a few weeks ago and just says temporary visitor on it. Take your Green card to the DMV when it shows up and they will update their records and send out a new license in the mail - takes 2 weeks.
