Vietnam Exit Visa - Child Born in VN w/ USC

I was wondering if anyone may have gone through the process of getting an exit permit / visa for a child born in Vietnam. Also the child is a USC and only has a US Passport. I know most parent's decided to get their children a US Passport and a Vietnamese Passport. Anyone know how or what to do about just getting an Exit permit or visa so we can leave the country? I have visited the Immigration building in Saigon but there seems to be a misunderstanding or they are not explaining the process to my understanding.

The only thing I can think of is getting my child a multi-entry tourist visa that will allow him to exit. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts or experience in this process.

Thank you in advance.

In the past VJ members have said that getting the VN passport for the baby is a lot easier than going through the steps for the exit visa.

Add the child to the housebook and then apply for the VN passport. Takes a couple of weeks according to other VJ members.

Thanks Anh Map for the quick reply back. I would not have any issue going that route. I would prefer to get the exit visa stamp. In our case, it might be a little easier to obtain the stamp rather travel back up north just to add him in the redbook. Then, we would need to travel again to the DOJ for the passport.

However, I am seeing a pattern of people in my situation going the dual passport route not sure by choice or if they had already elected for the child to have dual passports.

If anyone else did the exit visa, I would greatly appreciate any feedback. If not, I guess we will go the VN passport route.

Hello Kdrayvnmc76,

I have a similar situation like you, but I decided applying a Vietnamese passport route for my daughter instead doing exit permit.

The process of applying VN passport is quite simple. It only took 2 weeks to have it done.

Exit permit is considered rare, and I never heard anyone had chosen this method.

But, having a VN is big bang for the buck just because it is cheaper, easier, not to mention that traveling back for a visit would be a big plus.

Cheers

Thanks WhiteDove for your help and input. I think we are going to give the exit permit / visa a try at first. If we go for the VN Passport route, it is a little more involved with the distance to her family up north. Although, it sounds like the ideal way to go plus it might be the option we're left with in the end.

I will let everyone know what the outcome will be as soon as we get word on the exit permit / visa. I think it will at least give someone down the road an alternate avenue to explore that option.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

This is Vietnam. I'd be willing to bet that the child will need to be on the housebook for the exit visa too. Of course the right amount of coffee money can often help with the pesky details.

Hello All,

Just an update and a FYI for those who want to pursue an Exit Visa for their child born in Vietnam with USC status and a US Passport. The other alternative choice is to get a Vietnamese Passport for your child if you choose to go that route.

To get an Exit Visa stamp you must visit In Ho Chi Minh: 254 Nguyễn Trãi street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam

Here is a link to their contact and information online: http://www.vietnam-immigration.org.vn/news/view/contact-information-of-vietnam-immigration-department-in-vietnam.html

-You will need to get the document form NA5 and fill it out. (You can get the form at the front entrance window of the building for a small fee or print it out online)

-Then, the NA5 form will need to get a red stamp at the mother's place of residence (NA5 form place for child's signature -just leave it blank-)

-Next, take the stamped NA5 form with Mother's ID Card, Child's Birth Certificate, and US Passport back to the Immigration Dept. in HCMC

-You will be given an option to choose a 1 month, 3 month, or 6 month single or multi-entry visa. (Prices will vary)

-After a week (they will give you a receipt w/ date to return), you return to the same Immigration Department in HCMC 254 Nguyễn Trãi street, District 1 to pick up the child's stamped US Passport

PS - At the beginning, you will need to get a number to queue and wait. Later, you just bring the pick-up receipt and present it to personnel for immediate service with going through the number queue.

I hope this will help someone down the road that is inquiring about getting the exit visa stamp.

Best regards
