Cruz: Obama ‘More Upset’ At GOP Than Terrorists, Need ‘Fundamental Reforms’ To Visa Waiver System

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) argued, “seems more upset that Republicans are calling for protecting this country than he is that ISIS terrorists murdered 129 people in Paris” and argued “we need fundamental reforms to the visa waiver system” on Thursday’s “Happening Now” on the Fox News Channel.

Cruz said, “instead of engaging in political warfare, how about the president do his job as commander-in-chief? He seems more upset that Republicans are calling for protecting this country than he is that ISIS terrorists murdered 129 people in Paris. … And the president should be protecting this nation, not insulting you and me, and millions of Americans, calling us un-American, because we want to keep to defend this nation and we want to keep our children safe.”

Cruz then talked about legislation he introduced that “would have barred refugees from coming to America from countries where ISIS or al Qaeda controls significant amounts of territory. It would have focused on Syria, and Iraq, and Libya, and Somalia, and Yemen. And that is because we cannot determine who is a terrorist and who is not. And so, it would have, for three years, blocked refugees from coming to America. Now, we can assist in resettling those refugees in the Middle East, in majority-Muslim countries, and right now America is already providing ten times more money for resettling refugees than any other country on earth. So, when the president postures about compassion, America’s a compassionate country, but we shouldn’t risk the safety and security of American citizens.” Cruz continued that ISIS is engaging in genocide against Christians, and this legislation has an exemption for “those facing genocide.” Cruz further said, “what’s astonishing, among the Syrian refugees who’ve come to America, do you know that only three percent have been Christians? Why does the president get so angry at those of us who want to help provide a safe haven for Christians being persecuted, but he’s not angry at ISIS terrorists. He won’t even call them radical Islamic terrorists, instead, he defends them. I think that’s really backwards.”

He added, “the legislation calls I introduced calls for vigorous background checks. You know, if you look at it, there’s no history of ISIS attempting to embed in the Christian community and pretending to be Christians four years back, and so the statute provides that if they’re people who subject to genocide, they have the burden of proof to prove, by overwhelming evidence, that they are indeed a member of that persecuted community, and that they are facing a threat, and they don’t pose a terrorist threat.”

Cruz also stated, “we need fundamental reforms to the visa waiver system, given the prevalence of radical Islamic terrorism in Europe. That is a serious concern.” He also pointed to his legislation that would strip US citizenship from Americans who join ISIS.

GOP bill would change Visa Waiver Program

Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) has introduced a bill that seeks to strengthen border security in the face of the threat from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Thousands of ISIS members are thought to be carrying Western passports, which has raised alarms that they could enter the United States and take part in an attack.

“The threat of home-grown terrorism is real and growing,” Coats said in a statement Tuesday. “It is imperative that we address these new dangers to our homeland by acting to reassess and strengthen our border security.”

Coats’s bill would suspend the Visa Waiver Program for countries that don’t comply with information-sharing practices, and would permit the Secretary of State to revoke passports issued to U.S. citizens suspected of engaging in terrorism.

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens from several dozen nations to travel to the U.S. without a visa.

The Coats bill would also amend criminal statutes to make supporting a terrorist organization an act of treason.

The bill comes amid news that some of the approximately 100 Americans who went to the Middle East to fight with groups like ISIS and al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria have now come back to the U.S.

The list “includes those who have gone, those who have tried to go, those who have come back and are under active ... the FBI is looking at them,” a senior administration official said on Monday.

Aides said Coats plans on speaking with his colleagues on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Department of Homeland Security to move this legislation forward.

Ugh. What a joke. I am puzzled that he followed up the K1 mention with the ''use technology to escape justice''. Can't think of what ''technology'' they used in their application process. Found it odd he chose to put that statement right in there with that. Still wondering what the VWP has to do with any of it too, how on earth are they going to make it harder, bar adding more questions to an ESTA form.

They weren't even in the no-gun list. No 2nd. amendment rights were harmed during the committing of this terrorist act; or that in Colorado Springs, Charleston, Aurora, Newtown, etc...

Were either of these nutjobs even on the no-fly list? And as far as taking a harder look at people who come to the USA without a visa, well I'm confused by that as well. She had a Visa.

They didn't use the bombs because the guns were quicker and easier to use at the time, which is what has been said here all along. Guns are the easiest and quickest weapon to use when wanting to kill someone. But you gun lovers are all about pointing the finger elsewhere. These people had bombs made and ready to go, but they didn't have the time required to plant them and detonate them. If this doesn't prove the point about guns being the weapon of choice, I don't know what does.
