Grand Compromise

14 members have voted

  1. 1. Would you support a compromise, Universal Background Checks for Universal Conceal Carry

    • Yes, I would support the Compromise
    • No, I would not support the Compromise
  2. 2. My previous answer was based on the following

    • I support private ownership of firearms, but do not believe in compromising my rights
    • I support private ownership of firearms, and see this as a strong balance and constitutional
    • I support private ownership, but not conceal carry and do not want to compromise on the issue.
    • I support private ownership but it is limited to single action / non semi autos
    • I do not support private ownership and feel all sales of firearms should end and people should be forced to turn in their weapons

I've mentioned this before, but I'll add a poll to see where people stand.

The Federal Government should grant the request of Brady / Moms Demand Action for universal background checks. In return, the Federal government codifies conceal carry so that all 50 states become shall issue (meaning if you meet the requirements, IE. training, exam, clean record you may conceal carry in all 50 states regardless of race, religion, sexual preference etc.)

I would be down with something in that neighborhood, as long as the application process was not overly burdsome,

That would be a give by both sides

That would be a give by both sides

Burdensome paperwork so far in my life:

Applying for mortgage or to re-finance a mortgage.

Enlisting in the Marine Corps

Petitioning for a K-1 visa

Anything official in the PRC

If it's less than all the above I'm down.

And it would not have to be each time you bought a weapon. Once you have the permit, you are done.

Here in the Great state of Georgia, I hold a firearms license as does my LPR wife.

When we buy guns we just show our permit and we are done.

I would also be in favor of stiffer penalties . If you obtain a gun illegally and use it in a crime, Draconian measures.

When I lived in NC your purchase permit (for handguns only) was only good for three.

I'm not advocating a purchase permit. If I averaged state laws I would say the conceal carry permit is probably about 15 hrs of live fire training, plus a practical exam.

For regular purchases, all you have to do is fill out 4473 for an instanteous check. It takes 4-5 minutes to fill out.

27.1% of Americans live in
"Right Restricted" (8 "May Issue") states

http://www.moccw.org/map.html

Shall Issue means that as long as you pass basic requirements set out by state law, the issuing authority (county sheriff, police department, etc.) shall issue you a permit. May Issue means that you must pass basic requirements and the issuing authority may issue you a permit.

Shall Issue states have clearly defined parameters that you must fall within to get your license. They usually including things like an age restriction (generally 21 years old), the requirement to take a firearms safety training course, and that you properly fill out the application, get finger prints done, and provide a passport-style photograph. You will also likely be subjected to a background check, and in your application, you will have to make it clear if you have any past criminal record.

If you do everything correctly, the issuing authority simply confirms all of the information you have given, and if all the information checks out, you shall be issued a permit, with no judgment given from or by the issuing authority.

May Issue states have defined parameters as well, similar to Shall Issue states. However, there is usually a requirement that you provide a reason for wanting to carry concealed. Usually this reason must be that you have a real reason to fear for your life or safety, or that of your family. May Issue states, therefore, are more restrictive than Shall Issue, because the issuing authority has a say in whether you get a permit or not. May Issue states give the issuing authority the right to pass judgment as to whether or not you should be allowed to have a permit.

If you do everything correctly, the issuing authority still must contemplate whether you should be given a permit or license, which means that even if you would have been granted a permit in a Shall Issue state, you may not qualify in a May Issue state because of the restrictive measures that an issuing authority may consider when deciding your licensing fate.

Overall, Shall-Issue states allow you to exercise more of your freedom, because you are not subjected to judgment by the issuing authority, who could come up with myriad reasons why you should not be able to carry concealed. Some May-Issue states have gone so far as to be considered Restricted or No-Issue in all but name.

The push back from the may issue states would be strong. NY City, Washington DC would be the strongest. .. Standard 15 round mags across the board ? . They like the control over their subjects.in these liberal states.

Florida currently has more concealed-carry permit holders than any other state, with 1,269,021 issued as of May 14, 2014

Concealed weapon permits are already legal in all 50 states, and the NRA's focus is less about enacting additional state protections than on making sure the permits already issued still apply when the gun owners cross the country. But opponents fear the measure would allow more lenient gun regulations to trump stricter ones when permit holders travel across state lines.

"The standards for who can carry in one state versus another vary greatly — as they should given that carrying in Utah is a very different thing than carrying in a densely populated city," Lizzie Ulmer, a spokeswoman for former New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety group, told Al Jazeera. "We believe that each state should set its own standards and that this legislation would undermine those laws.

I couldn't vote because no follow up question fit my view point

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

Pointless question for Colorado, already the requirement.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
