Hi everyone, my fiancee came on a K-1 visa and she recently got her SSN card with the words “Valid for employment with DHS Authorization” printed on it. Was this the correct card for her to get? I heard some people say they received an unrestricted SSN. Who is eligible for this, and should she go back to obtain an unrestricted social security card?... thanks

Claudeth has the same thing and hasn't bothered to remove the workding. You can get this removed once the green card is issued.

Whats the difference between having the “Valid for employment with DHS Authorization” printed on it and an unrestricted SSN? Do K-1 visa holders usually get their SSN with the “Valid for employment with DHS Authorization” printed on it? Or do they get an unrestricted card?

O received a "Valid for employment with DHS Authorization" social security card. He had to show his I-94 with the Employment Authorized stamp to become employed. He got that stamp at JFK when he arrived (POE) on a k-1 finace visa.

There have been a couple of recent reports here of SS cards issued without the wording. Those cards are errors.

The card should bear the wording "Valid for Employment with DHS authorization".

This is true. This is the one my husband has, too. ALthough now that he has his green card, I'm wondering if he should have a different one? ANyone know?

rebccajo is 100% correct!..

When I came in on the K1 about 2 or so weeks after i arrived I applied for my SSN. It arrived about 2 weeks later with the notation "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" printed across it.

Once I got my GC I returned to the local SSA and essentially fought the idiot at the counter to give me what I was legally entitled to. A SSC that is clear of the notation above. As a GC holder you are entitled to have the notation removed no matter what the people at the SSA tell you, it's their rules and it's on their site. If in doubt search the SSA website, print it and take it in with you or ask mdyoung for help.

The only difference I've noticed having the SSN that is clear of the notation is that people don't look at it like it's a fake. I assume most people haven't seen a SSN that isn't exactly the same as they have. Another reason to have a unrestricted SSC is if for some reason your GC expires, gets lost or your waiting on a renewal you wont need DHS authorization for employment.

Good Luck :)

lou,

That notation is not a restriction. It's a reminder. A reminder to employers that they need to verify the person's employment authorization status before employing them.

With or without the notation, an employer must verify that it's employees - including its' US citizen employees - are employment authorized. Since US citizens and Permanent Residents are employment authorized by virtue of their status, their SS cards do not carry the reminder. They simply need to show that they are a citizen or an LPR and their employment authorized status is a given.

For anyone else who qualifies to obtain a SS card by virtue of having obtained temporary employment authorization, the reminder is supposed to be there because the employment authorization may have expired.
