Is engagement really necessary for fiance visa?

Hello everyone! Me and my fiance are not religious people, and I never understand what is engagement about. I thought people are doing it for fun. Is it something official in US when you get documents after engagement? Will consular at interview ask for proof of engagement?

Well engagement is just a term that means you are intending to get married to each other. Many people who are not at all religious practice engagements.

It is a fiance visa, and in order to be someone's fiance you would technically have to be engaged to them.

That being said, having a ring or anything is not a requirement.

You will have to both provide statements of intent to marry, which you will have to sign.

It's sort of a gray area since there really is no clear legal status to an engagement like there is a marriage.

But I will say, if during the interview you are asked whether or not you are engaged, I would imagine that saying no would be a huge and confusing red flag.

Thanks for reply!

No problem!

I must not have seen the part where you asked if you get documents in the U.S. after you get engaged so I just want to clarify that specifically by saying no, you don't.

The only thing sorta remotely like that which you need for the K-1 is the Letter of Intent for you I-129f that I mentioned which is just something you can type up that says "I *insert name* hereby state that I am legally able and willing to marry *insert fiancés name here* and intend to do so within 90 days of my/their arrival to the U.S." You have to sign it and put contact info and stuff there are plenty of templates online for it.

That's pretty much it. The one other thing you mayyy want to mention engagement on is a part on the I-129f application that asks about the situation of your relationship like when you meet, how did you meet, stuff like that. We included our engagement date in that statement but I'm pretty sure it's not required.

Oh also they interviewer may ask stuff like how long were you engaged. But literally every interview is different and a lot of it is up to the CO's discretion from what I understand so it's hard to say.

Whoo! I hope that covered everything you needed and more!

As the above poster said, "engaged" just means you're planning to get married. There is nothing official. My fiance and I talked for about five YEARS about getting married and maybe moving to be together, until we finally decided to file the I-129F. We never had one particular day where we said "okay now we're engaged" -- it just developed naturally over a period of months and years. I didn't have or want a ring, and neither did he. We are not religious at all. Other than many conversations, we had no particular "proof" of our engagement.

In the visa process, the lack of an official "date" of engagement and the lack of a ring were NEVER a problem. We did of course both write letters included in the visa packet that said "we intend to marry!" but other than that, we were never asked for any other engagement information. We had not even set a wedding date in particular, just knew we would get married after he arrived.

You're engaged if you plan to marry your fiance. Simply write a short statement saying you are able and very much willing to marry him/her, and you're set!

No they want those letter of intent. That's all.
