American Women and Russian Men, an Oxymoron in the Making?

I have no clue what the summertime weather in Siberia is like... = ?

Of note, when I finally forswore trying to date any more U.S. women, one area that I looked at was Siberia. I corresponded with the owner of an IMB who worked with Siberianettes. He was nicely frank about everything, and noted that Siberianettes tended to be more laid back, etc., than were women from the larger cities farther west.

I obviously opted for Latin America in the end, chiefly because of language-barrier concerns and travel time. I was extremely fortunate that flights to Ecu were under 5.5 hours (and nonstop or with one logical connection), versus how beastly long it must take to fly to Siberia. In addition, we were either in the same time zone or off by no more than an hour.

TBone, you are spot on regarding women from Siberia. Katya is totally laid back, and I was lucky with the language barrier since she speaks great English. I did a bit of self education on the Russian language (thanks Rosetta Stone), and I can at least read it fairly well, and have limited conversations. As to flights there, you are also correct. Normally one would usually fly through Moscow via New York, Paris, or Amsterdam and spend a day and a half traveling, and in my two trips on that route my luggage took two extra days to arrive. When we were researching the best way for Katya to travel on her K1 we wanted to make her POE Detroit if possible. We found that a Russian airline S7 flies direct from Krasnoyarsk to Beijing two days a week, from there it was easy as Delta has dailies to Detroit. It was still a day and a half traveling with an extra day going West, but much more conveinant with only two flights. Russian immigration was quite surprised to see an American passport coming off the Beijing flight on my last trip. At least Beijing handled the luggage better, it arrived on the same flight! Only two flights? Amazing. How many hours long was each flight? The frequent-flyer miles on Delta must get racked up in a hurry.

And what's the seasonal weather like in K.'s part of Siberia during the year?

I really respect all Amcits who have the determination, extra time & funds, and personal fortitude to travel so many hours east & west. As stated, I had it really easy -- my only comparison is having driven through Pennsylvania south-to-north, which is far easier than east-to-west!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Thirteen hours Detroit to Beijing, and about four hours Bejing to Krasnoyarsk. By comparison it is eight hours Detroit to Paris, three Paris to Moscow, and five to six Moscow to Krasnoyarsk. The biggest difference is the flexibility, you can take the West to East route almost any day, but you are limited on the East to West route, and the layovers can stretch to twelve hours, although I once had a ten hour layover in Moscow. A good example as to travel times in Russia is the fact that it takes almost twelve hours to fly from Moscow to Vladivostok. By comparison, Boston to LA flight is around six hours.

Weather in Krasnoyarsk is similar to Michigan with a few exceptions, the Winter is usually longer (late September to mid-May) and colder (some days as cold as -40), but Summer can be warm (90+) especially late July and August.

I agree with your statement regarding respecting people that are willing and able to go the extra mile to find that special someone. I sometimes look back at our story and am amazed at how we went from a simple email from a dating site to where we are today. When I started this process, my family thought I was nuts, but now they see the results and love Katya.
