The best self defense shotguns IMO are semi auto - Boiler and Charles will actually disagree with me here I think. I suspect they would advocate for a pump action. However in a high intensity situation I believe there is more opportunity for user error with a pump.

Outside of shotguns and revolvers, a non semiauto means bolt or singleshot.

That tends to fit with what I've heard, but everyone is has their own preferences, I get it.

Outside of shotguns and revolvers, we've got rifles. Why would anyone need more than a singleshot or bolt action rifle realistically?

I appreciate you having this conversation.

If you miss, you may be done for. The only truly fast bolt gun I have ever used is an SMLE.

Going back to handguns for a second, revolvers have capacity issues with generally 5-7 shots.

My grandpa would have said that's a marksmanship issue, not a capacity issue. But anyway ......

Aren't these mainly used for hunting at long distances? In what situation would one be done for when using a singleshot or bolt action rifle?

I don't see where the average Joe would need any more rounds than that. Cops, secret service or military yes, but not you or me living in our homes, living an average every day life.

i won't disagree on a shotgun for the very reason you stated.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Your probably not going to use a rifle for defense in your home or in urban areas but rural areas yes. In addition to humans, bears are a factor.

Of the two bear species in North America, Black Bears are easier to deal with. They generally run if confronted the correct way. Brown are different. They move so quickly if you miss with a single shot you may be killed. Not advocating shooting Brown though, they are protected in all states I believe.

Capacity is about multiple attackers and attackers not stopping with a single shot.

I quite like a semi auto carbine for that role. 9mm.
