In Tampa office it says this:

Naturalization Ceremonies

The Tampa Field Office has Judicial Ceremonies on a monthly basis and Administrative Ceremonies on a weekly basis. The Tampa Field Office does have same-day ceremonies occasionally.

What does this mean? Is the same day I have my interview, will I be taking oath the same day? Or there is any specific day of the month we need to take oath?

This is for Tampa, but others can find similar information for their field offices.

There are three prices of important information here:

1- If you require a judicial oath (if you have requested a name change) then there is at least one ceremony each month.

2- If you can take an administrative oath (if you have not requested a name change) then there is at least one ceremony each week.

3- There is a possibility that you may take the oath on the same day as your interview. This is something that not all offices offer, but Tampa does. Since they do not have an oath ceremony each day, you will have to be lucky enough to have your interview scheduled on a day they have a ceremony. You will probably also have to have an interview earlier in the day because if you have a late interview you will miss the ceremony. If you don't get a same day ceremony, you'll be sent an oath letter in the mail with the date of your ceremony.

Woohoo and thanks so much JimmyHou for updating.

Just an update to my question about entry back into the US after citizenship happens while my passport application is pending, I talked to an American IO at the Niagara Falls bridge on Saturday during my NEXUS card renewal and he informed me that as long as I had my naturalization certificate, my NEXUS card with my newly updated citizenship information as well as my NY state drivers license that should be sufficient for entry back into the US while my US passport application is being processed.

So first you will go update your Nexus card using the certificate? Is that really enough? I'm kinda surprised since the Nexus card is also tied specifically to a passport number. I will be worried about crossing until I get passports updated on Nexus cards (me and the kids) because I have more than once received contradictory information from the border officers. One time, a woman was training a fellow. I presented my Nexus card (and kids') and when she asked my status and I said PR and reached for my green cards he instructed him (and me) that I am not to present my Nexus card but have to present my green card when coming back in to the U.S. WHAT? that's not true! I am required to have my green card with me but my Nexus card is supposed to be getting me back in! Yikes! One time out of 10 crossings I am asked for my green card but usually they just wave me through after flashing my Nexus card.

I'm curious about this in a big scary way because the timing of my oath is likely to be very bad with travel plans with kids! I'm aiming to go to Buffalo for same day passport processing which is what i think you are doing too? Did you check in with them about that yet?

I'm 100% sure that what both moemac59 and Ms Hogan have posted is correct. Customs and Border Patrol are inconsistent with their advice, unfortunately.

First of all, CBP is required by law to check passports at the Canadian and Mexican land borders. This has been the case since 2007, but to this day, they don't always enforce this.

Secondly, this is a fact that is not in question;

a U.S. Citizen is required to enter and leave the U.S. with a U.S. Passport.

However, the law stipulates no penalty for failing to comply with this state department requirement.

Additionally, CBP cannot deny entry to a U.S. Citizen except under suspicion that that person causes a threat to public safety (for example that person has a communicable disease and needs to be quarantined). This doesn't mean, however, that you MAY not face long delays at the border if they demand to see a U.S. Passport and you don't have one.

So because of the vagueness of the consequences and the inconsistency in applying the requirement, my only advice is that you comply with the only clear statement about this whole matter and get a passport before you travel.

You have the option of an expedited passport at a passport agency, and if that doesn't work, you have the option to request that your oath ceremony be rescheduled for a later time.

Below is a link to the Buffalo Passport agency (run by the State Department and not by USCIS). Their website says that they will allow you to make an appointment to submit your passport and then pick up your passport in person "for life and death emergencies or immediate international travel". You can call or stop by to confirm that they can provide you with a same-day or next-day passport, but people at other passport agencies do this all the time so I don't think it'll be an issue. To speed things up, you'll want to schedule your appointment just under 2 weeks before your oath so you can visit the agency the day of or the day after your oath.

http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/information/where-to-apply/agencies/buffalo.html

I hope this helps.

Congratulations... note that you're the first of those who applied before their anniversary date to be placed in-line for interview, and it happened exactly 1 month before your anniversary date. This isn't always the case, but it seems to happen to the majority of early-filers.

For those who don't file early, you'll usually be placed in-line as soon as your background check is complete.

For those who file early, you'll usually be placed in-line very close to 1 month before your anniversary. However, for some reason, this doesn't happen to everyone. Also, if your background check isn't done, you usually won't be placed in-line at that time.

In some cases, people make it all the way to the interview and find out that their background check isn't done... so being placed in-line is a good sign that you've cleared background checks, but it isn't a guarantee.
