When you order your tax transcripts online, you can get both the transcript of the returns filed and a transcript of the W-2's for that year. Perhaps they want the latter. I sent both types of transcripts of all 3 previous tax years with my application. The visa journey process is arduous. They're always making RFE's for just about any reason. Best just to provide them with the information and not worry further about it.

I don't remember getting W2 from IRS but may be because I had the luxury of obtaining one on demand!

However if they are asking for W2 and it doesn't hurt, send it. In one of my past encounter I've seen NVC sending the approval stating the beneficiary needs to bring the original Birth Certificate of the petitioner. Guess what, embassy didn't say a word throughout the interview on petitioners Birth Certificate. It didn't hurt us to send an extra mail and didn't want to take the risk of "what if they ask for it".

My suggestion, if it's not a challenge to obtain your W2 through employer, send it. If this means you need to reach out IRS for a copy, get to and send it.

Good luck
