hi,

I am trying to figure out what to do with my car situation. i drove down to the US a couple months ago and ended up staying longer than expected. my american bf and i have gotten engaged but i dont know when we will get married. my problem is that my car insurance will expire in a couple weeks, and i won't be able to renew it because the insurance is very expensive in canada - about 250/month. my fiance and i can't afford that and we would like to put the car under his insurance, since it will be more like 50 dollars a month. is there a simple way to just hand him the title of my vehicle? my mother is also a resident, would it be easier to put it under her name? how can i do this as a "visitor", i have not filed any paperwork yet. and I don't want to be stuck with no insurance!

thanks,

CB

1. The car must meet US standards in order to be registered in the US. If it does not meet US standards, then you can not register it here.

2. Car can not have a lien on it if you want to "import" to the US.

3. Taxes will need to be paid if you transfer the car to someone else.

4. The procedure to transfer the car is state specific. Check with the DMV in your state. The info will be on the DMV's website.

Car is newer with no lien.

Can they make me pay taxes if it's going to my fiance, or even my own mom?

Yes. Any car being sold requires taxes, however it needs to be imported by a resident before being able to be registered in the USA. That means whomever you sell it to will either need to pay an importer to do all the paperwork, or take it to a CBP inspection center, have it imported, and pay the duty on the car.

Also its quite possible that your insurance does not cover you in the USA anyhow.
