I am due to file for ROC in April '16, 2 year GC expires 7/7/16. What happens if I have to leave the country and more importantly I suppose return after my GC has expired but before my new one has arrived?

Can I get back in with old GC and I-751 notice? (is it i=751 receipt notice? how we forget already)

Yes. Your receipt noice includes the wording that says your status is extended one year. So the notice plus expired card works while the new card processes.

once you are done with fingerprints they will send you extension letter for one year. if you think you will be out more than a year make an infopass and ask for stamp
