Dual Citizenship

Hi there I need some advice...

I am in the process of applying for adjustment of status (came into the US on K1 visa and got married to a US citizen).

I already have dual citizenship for Ireland and South Africa.

How does this affect my adjustment of status? Or does it only become an issue when applying for citizenship? Do I need to give up one of my other citizenships? I've never heard of anyone having three...

If for some reason I didn't want to give them up, could I continue to live in the US as a permanent resident without applying for citizenship?

The US does not care if you have other citizenships. The other countries may care but the US does not. This will not be an issue later on. Good luck! :)

05/20/16 - Received 1st NOA (dated 05/13/16) & created ELIS acct - Day 10

05/21/16 - Received 2nd NOA (dated 05/16/16) confirming my DOB and address - Day 11

05/22/06 - Biometrics scheduled (online update) and appt letter was mailed on 05/20/16 - Day 12

05/24/06 - Biometrics letter became viewable online (appt scheduled for 06/07/16) - Day 14

05/27/16 - Received Biometrics letter in mail - Day 17

05/31/16 - Was denied walk-in fingerprints with just 1 person left in line. Milwaukee office, boo! - Day 21

06/07/16 - Biometrics completed in Milwaukee, WI - Day 28

12/21/16 - Passed Citizenship test/Interview was successful! - Day 197

01/26/17 - I am a US citizen!!! - Day 233

My husband just got his Permanent Residency. He is a citizen of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. I don't know if it will be an issue when he applied for citizenship, but it wasn't an issue when applying for residency.

As it applies to the USA, there is no issue. When you receive US citizenship, you will keep your other citizenship's unless the other countries laws do not allow dual citizenship. Some countries do not.

I assume since you already have dual citizenship from Ireland and South Africa that both of those countries allow it, so it appears you will soon be a triple-citizen. :dance:

I suppose there are advantages and disadvantages. It's just hard to know which, sometimes.

My wife had to give up Ukrainian citizenship when she naturalized. At the time she didn't have an issue with the concept. Several things have since come up since - travel visa's and property ownership - that she has some regrets about. In retrospect it probably would have been better if she remained an LPR until those things were resolved.

She also brings it up every time she get's jury duty. :)
