Okay.....I must admit, as I am American, that there are lots of truly ignorant people in the

U.S. and many that have no clue about what is beyond its borders. Also, I recognize

that the American educational system is lacking. However, some of us

from the U.S. are quite intelligent. Luckily, most of us realize the ignorance displayed by many

U.S. citizens and our government at times (many times); one definitely has to have a sense of humor.

However, in many ways the U.S. is a wonderful place....don't bash it, or us too badly. After all, all of you

are looking to get there for one purpose or another, right?

Well on the other hand, I do remember friends in highschool (we lived 3 hours from Detroit and 2 hours from Buffalo) and one of my friends though Detroit was near California on the water. I have other friends out of college who never heard of Rhode Island or knew that Wyoming was a state or that there was a North and South Dakota and so on. So ignorance goes on both sides of the border, it's just not one way...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

But of course. If my husband (a USC) were that ignorant, I wouldn't have married him now, would I? :)

No matter where you live, there'll always be a mixture of worldly and ignorant people.

Congrats....and not only am I in the North Bay Area, I'm origionally from Southern Ontario ;)

I keep thinking we should start a Bay Area Visa Journey club and use it as an excuse to travel the bay area and meet other canadians :)

I think someone tried to start one up in the "Moving Here and Your New Life In America" section, but that thread got buried! Most people seem to be living in the South Bay and in the big city. Mind if I add you as a friend?

That's a very Canadian response.

What I got from this thread is the warning not to hand over my Canadian driver's licence without first making sure that they will give me back my personal property and without mutilating it. Why on earth would they destroy other people's personal property that they might still want and need? I can see destroying a licence from another state if people are allowed to have only one US licence, but why destroy a licence for another country?

Hi Everyone,

Hmm...interesting thought. Simple answer: Because Canada is "unofficially" the 51st US State! You'd be surprised how close/similar (yet at the same time so far/different) that Canada is like the USA. The main differences between Canada and the USA are really minor things. Heck, it's minor enough that they actually let Canadians exchange their licenses here in the USA, in many cases not having to re-take any tests all over again. And yes, the MTO (or whatever other provincial/territorial driver's licencing issuing authority there is in Canada) can sure learn a thing or two about the DMV here in the USA!

And why would anyone who is living permanently in the USA need two driver's licenses anyways, especially if they don't live in Canada at all? It doesn't make sense (unless you live equally 50/50 in USA/Canada). Think: two licenses=more hassle and double the expenses, anyways...

Oh and to all of you Canadians who want to "keep" their old Canadian license before you surrender/exchange it for a US one, just make a coloured copy of the Canadian one, and that should suffice as a reminder...It's ok to let that Canadian License go to for an American License!....

Happy driving everyone! Good luck on your immigration journeys...

Hi Languageladki,

I totally agree! There is definitely a lot of good in America. It is a wonderful place and it has lots of wonderful people, indeed! Isn't it why so many people want to immigrate here in the first place? America, a place where one can pursue their "American Dreams" and have it become a reality!

And to all the people who complain about America, quit complaining for goodness sakes! If you can't stand it here in America, then I suggest you move back to the country that you originally came from. If there's one thing that America should be proud of, it is definitely its sense of patriotism and of the concept of being "United"....

And yes, I'm proud to be "American" (or a "Soon-to-be officially American)", and to call "America" my homeland!

Well I'm not going to speak for the other Canadians here but the only reason why I'm moving is to be with my husband as it makes more sense for his career to stay there for now. If the marriage ended, I'd come back to Canada in a heartbeat.

Patriotism is all fine and dandy except when it single-handedly dismisses critiques in a STFU kind of way. That doesn't sit well with me.

I'm agreeing with you too. The only reason I'm here is because of my husband as well :)

Don't care one bit about patriotism or "the American Dream" (sorry, Ant, I had a career going on for me back in Canada and didn't need to move here to fulfill any dreams... my "dream" is to be well-travelled and a citizen of the world, and the term "patriotism" actually sends a shiver down my back).

I don't think I will ever feel "American". I know if somethign were to happen to my wife, I would be packed up ASAP and back to canada. Not that the USA is bad, but Canada is home, closer to family and Tim Hortons!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I agree. I too am here for my husband. I had a well established career back in Canada, and family and friends. But made the choice to come here for him. Grant it I will make the best of a life here I can for us and our family. But should something change or happen to him I would also move back without a second thought.
