I'm still waiting on my reparations from the Roman Empire. Or maybe from when England systematically rounded up and imprisoned/murdered my Catholic ancestors. One of my direct relatives starved to death in the tower of London because he was a Catholic priest. Or from the second class citizen status my American ancestors had due to be being Catholic. Or any of the other civilizations that enslaved my family going back over the last few thousand years.

So you feel the reparations to the Jewish people were wrong?

Reparations from a defeated country to the actual people that were wronged? No I don't think its wrong. Generations later? No way to quantify it. You guys aren't the only group of people that have been severely wronged throughout history. I've said it before, the way the Chinese, and to a lesser extent the Irish, were treated in the US during the construction of the railroad was as deplorable as what was happening on the southern plantations. It wasn't the same level of institution as slavery but the concern for a Chinese person's life was 0. The slavery aspect was there with a different spin. Chinese traders would bring in supplies of labors (men) and sex workers (women) that they would supply to the railroad companies for almost nothing. They had 0 rights. And due to the ample supply of slave workers from China, no one cared about their lives.

Read about history. Our world history is one of wars being waged, people being conquered, cities being looted or razed, its occupants being murdered/raped/sold to slavery. All cultures have done it, Europeans/Asians/Persians/Africans/Americans. They ALL did it.

Question.

Have you ever been directly affected by any of those things? My family was. Not my ancestors hundreds of years removed. My immediate family members.

And this is something that still goes on to this day.

Also, send me a link about the Catholic being second class citizens. Not being mean, I'm always wanting to learn more about history.

my god. jim crow only ended 50 years ago. how could an entire generation of blacks in america still be whining about something that couldn't possibly affect their lives today.

But in the least we could - and should indeed - be concerned with what happened in this country? We can't answer for the Roman Empire and other civilizations, but we can - must rather - answer for what took place in the United States. I don't think it would be too far fetched to expect that as a nation we don't look to, nor find inspiration in how the Chinese treat their citizens. On the contrary, we should look at them as a lesson on how to not treat humans. It's not that we shouldn't care about them, so much as we should care about what happens inside our borders.

In regards to slavery, I will believe we should drop the issue once everyone stops talking about confederate pride and heralding the confederate flag as though it were a symbol of something to be proud of; however, I have a feeling we are more likely to go ice skating on the Styx before any of that should take place.

You know, I kinda wish the U.S. Would roll out a large lump sum of money to all ancestors of southern slavery just so we could all watch it fail to achieve the results people think it will yield.

If you believe black Americans grievances have to do with money, you need to check your US history again.

As a red herring, however, your argument is right on point.

well like you said, a large lump sum of money spread out to who? how is such widespread and ongoing destruction traceable? it really isn't, and meaningful reparations would have to be made in an alternative manner. but just because reparations would be difficult, and pretty much worthless if administered in an individual manner - doesn't mean they aren't necessary.

Reparations as a rule is a dumb idea because it won't fix anything. And it will likely drive race relations further apart.

I'm not talking about reparations. I'm talking about admitting what was wrong and a heartfelt apology.

And when Germany paid the Jewish people with money and land, I'm not sure there was a downside to that.

Why are you so sure it would fail? What if those folks took it and started investing? Or putting it into black businesses? Or fixing up neighborhoods? Or fixing the school systems in those kind of neighborhoods?

Sorry Mrs Cleaver

But we already are paying billions in Govt a assistance that goes hugely disproportionately to those groups. We already AA, minority set asides for govt contracts and the list goes on.
