As usual you make my point for me. Thanks. I was pointing out that slavery was was 150 years ago, not the holocaust. Slavery ended in roughly 1865. The holocaust occurred ended in 1945. Just because you lived in Germany for a few years doesn't make you some sort of expert on a subject. Geesh. I lived in Quebec for a couple years, that hardly makes me some sort of expert on Quebec separatism.

Yes Germany paid billions of dollars to THOSE who were persecuted. Not their frigging great great great great grandchildren. I suspect there's a lot of folks thinking they are owed something for something that never happened to them, and THAT is the problem!

DIdn't say I was an expert, just saying what I saw when I was stationed there. Two, thanks for the clarification.

And tell me, what was paid to those who were persecuted here? What did the USA do for those who lived through that nightmare?

Who cares? They're all dead now. Just because someone you don't know 100 years ago was treated badly, doesn't mean you should somehow benefit from that just because you happen to be black. You want something, work for it like everyone else and quit whining about things that happened 100s of years ago. Get on with your life.

Native Americans are given more govt. handouts and benefits than any other demographic in the US, yet they have the highest poverty level. They also have the highest unemployment rate What does that tell you? In case you haven't put 2 and 2 together, sponging off the govt. Its' a sure fire way to ensure generations of poverty.

Treaty rights are based on legal binding negotiations between two governments. They are not handout's. The US government is paying a mortgage for the land they acquired and they will be paying that in perpetuity. Perhaps give consideration to how mismanagement and corruption and a policy of trying to Americanize native nations has contributed to poverty than blaming it on "free money".

Or maybe it could do with the European settlers took their land, raped their women and children, enslaved them, threw them in swamps, did I mention raped the men?

Those European settlers don't represent European settlers.

This is the root of the problem. Does that make what happened any less horrible? Just because they're dead doesn't mean the people of this country could try and make things right.

You brought up the Jewish people, which kind of highlights my point sadly. Germany did what they could to make amends for the Holocaust. Jewish people were given money AND land to help them assimilate back into society. Four years of systematic genocide. But, once Hitler's reign ended, the country made moves to help the survivors in the best way they could. Jewish people already knew how to read and write, owned property, and were productive members of society. This is why it didn't take them decades to make good. Now, let's look at black people:

400 plus years of slavery and almost 100 years of segregation. After the chains came off, what happened? They got a my bad and have a nice day. They didn't know how to read or write, run a business, or even invest money. Something white people had been doing since the beginning. Not to mention we were told that we couldn't be anything other than a thug or a pimp. Everything was/is done to hold them from obtaining any real wealth. But since you don't think what happens 100 years ago doesn't matter, let me put it in this perspective for you.

My grandfather lived to be 96 years old(he just passed away about 3 weeks ago). Back 50 years ago, he worked his butt off to move his wife and kids to a nice neighborhood. Saved every penny he had to get them out of the slums. Served his country on top of all of that. He did everything he was supposed to do. When it came down to the move, he was denied entry, based solely on the color of his skin. Forced to move into Pine Lawn, a more "ethnic" community with substandard housing and crappy school districts to boot. Google Normandy High School. My mom did everything in her power to keep me from going there.

We can't predict what could have happened, but when you pass down wealth from family members, things tend to swing in your favor. Had my family had the opportunities to live somewhere nice, go to proper schools, who knows what they could have achieved had they not been denied the chance to do so.

When was that? 150-200 years ago? Not really relevant today. Here's a little history lesson. In WWII 6 million jews were killed by the Nazis. They seem to have recovered pretty well. I don't recall ever hearing any of them blame something that happened 70 years to their grandparents, on their economic status today. Keep in mind all this raping and killing you speak of happened more than 150 years ago.

People that sit around and blame their current situation in life on events that happened before they were born, are destined to underperform. Simple as that. No amount of govt. money is going to fix that.

It's been shown that the reservations that receive the most gov help do the worst. Have more poverty, more crime etc. The ones who don't expect a handout and go out and make a life for themselves do pretty well.

It was 4 years of hell for the the Jewish population, once it ended, Germany and Israel did everything they could to try and make up for the atrocities that were committed. Black and Native Americans suffered for centuries(Native Americans had it worse IMO, since they were all but wiped out, and the ones who weren't killed were forced to adopt a culture that wasn't theirs). Not to mention that slavery ended, then began segregation, and so on.

4 years? You've got to be kidding me. Jews have been persecuted for centuries, and to a certain degree in certain countries still are. And even the holocaust lasted longer than 4 years, actually 12 to be precise, it pretty much began when Hitler rose to power, throughout the 1930s the legal, economic, and social rights of Jews were steadily restricted. You're only looking at the last 4 years of it.

Those European settlers don't represent European settlers.

lol. Nor do the few bad cops represent all cops.

It's really sad that you're ignoring centuries of history and only focusing on the worst 4 years of it.

Thank you for the correction. Still doesn't change the fact that Germany at least tried to do SOMETHING. The US have never officially apologized for slavery. And for that matter, how are Jewish people treated in their own country?

This is not a competition on who's been discriminated the most.

It's really sad that you're ignoring centuries of history and only focusing on the worst 4 years of it.

Actually she's not. Since the poster brought up Jewish people and the Holocaust, that's where the focus was. Since you corrected me, she now sees it.

I was thinking the same thing

I am referring to the fact that the comparisons between how Germany apologized, gave the Jewish people land and money for the wrongdoings committed by their country and how the U.S. treated it's slaves after slavery ended were completely ignored over semantics.

Marv's timing might have been off but it doesn't negate his entire argument.

I'm still waiting on my reparations from the Roman Empire. Or maybe from when England systematically rounded up and imprisoned/murdered my Catholic ancestors. One of my direct relatives starved to death in the tower of London because he was a Catholic priest. Or from the second class citizen status my American ancestors had due to be being Catholic. Or any of the other civilizations that enslaved my family going back over the last few thousand years.
