Democrat senator BRILLIANTLY explains why he just switched REPUBLICAN

Republicans are rejoicing as the largest legislative district in the nation just flipped from blue to red.

Arizona State Senator Carlyle Begay, a Navajo (who also call themselves Diné) whose district includes Navajo and Hopi tribal lands, announced Monday that he is switching to the Republican Party.

Begay, 34, was appointed to the Arizona Senate in 2013 as a Democrat and re-elected in 2014.

In a moving video, Begay describes his Native American roots and the desperate conditions and challenges his constituents face. “This is not how our distinguished ancestors saw our future,” he said. “Change must happen now.”

Praising the GOP for working with him to improve conditions for his constituents, Begay said that his decision “will not be popular for some.”

“I clearly see the Republican Party as a party of progress, the party of opportunity, and moving forward, my party,” the video concludes.

Begay told The Arizona Republic Monday that his crucial vote crossing party lines to pass the current-year budget was his “tipping point.” After that vote, state Democrats barred him from using caucus resources such as issuing news releases.

“I was being isolated because I was fighting for people to have a voice,” Begay said. Welcomed by U.S. senators John McCain and Jeff Flake and many of the state’s GOP leaders, he told reporters at a news conference, “I want to help the Republican Party build a bridge with those who need and want a chance with those who can provide that chance.”

I don't think that I noticed anything "brilliant" in Mr. Begays' statement. I am also reasonably sure that he will be out of office in two years.

I want to know what has Republicans done for Native Americans.

I am sure this new Republican is celebrating Thanksgiving today.

The same thing Democrats have done for Native Americans.

Wanna know what 200 years of Government help looks like. Google native American poverty.

Native Americans are given more govt. handouts and benefits than any other demographic in the US, yet they have the highest poverty level. They also have the highest unemployment rate What does that tell you? In case you haven't put 2 and 2 together, sponging off the govt. Its' a sure fire way to ensure generations of poverty.

Or maybe it could do with the European settlers took their land, raped their women and children, enslaved them, threw them in swamps, did I mention raped the men?

When was that? 150-200 years ago? Not really relevant today. Here's a little history lesson. In WWII 6 million jews were killed by the Nazis. They seem to have recovered pretty well. I don't recall ever hearing any of them blame something that happened 70 years to their grandparents, on their economic status today. Keep in mind all this raping and killing you speak of happened more than 150 years ago.

People that sit around and blame their current situation in life on events that happened before they were born, are destined to underperform. Simple as that. No amount of govt. money is going to fix that.

All they really needed to do was give them a bottle of booze.

It is no secret that alcoholism is rampant among indians.

I'm not a math major, but I'm pretty sure the Holocaust didn't happen 150-200 years ago. Louis CK pointed this out when he said things like this seem to get years added on to it. So maybe it's time to bone up on your history.

For your information, it ended in 1945. 70 years ago. Second thing is, many Germans STILL take the blame for what happened. How do I know? Because I lived there for 3 years. And I talked to quite a few Germans that still feel the shame for their ancestors almost wiping out an entire population of people. Something that is frowned upon here. It was 4 years of hell for the the Jewish population, once it ended, Germany and Israel did everything they could to try and make up for the atrocities that were committed. Black and Native Americans suffered for centuries(Native Americans had it worse IMO, since they were all but wiped out, and the ones who weren't killed were forced to adopt a culture that wasn't theirs). Not to mention that slavery ended, then began segregation, and so on.

Also, Germany has paid out 6.81 billion dollars in reparations to those who were persecuted AND created a treaty so they could get their land back. I'm pretty sure my ancestors are still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule.

So I'll ask you this. What's the right decision? Jewish people got billions of dollars and land for living through 4 years of one of the worst nightmares in history. Black people and Native Americans went through this(and are still dealing with an unfair system) for over 400 years and haven't been paid a dime. Which side made the better choice?

Several of the native American Indian tribes have done well and are contributing to local, state and federal economies.

According to the 2013 Casino City Indian Gaming Industry Report, tribes had $27.4 billion in gaming revenue in 2011, up from $26.5 billion the year before. The report says those gaming revenues led to payments of $6 billion to the federal government, $3.8 billion to state governments, and $2.5 billion to local governments.

One of our local tribes is doing VERY well.

Seminole Tribe of Florida

Some analysts say the Seminole Tribe of Florida is worth several billion dollars. The Seminoles of Florida were the first American Indian tribe to establish a casino on Indian land more than 30 years ago. Now the tribe operates seven casinos in Florida.

In March 2007, the Seminoles of Florida purchased the Hard Rock International from the Britain-based company Rank Group PLC for an estimated $965 million. The unprecedented deal now includes 177 venues in 58 countries: 141 Hard Rock Cafés, 18 Hard Rock Hotels and 8 casinos. The tribe, which has more than 3,800 enrolled members, also acquired in the deal the largest collection of rock memorabilia in the world, including Jimmy Hendrix's Flying V guitar and one of Madonna's bustiers.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida directly employ more than 20,000 persons, including more than 10,000 in their Florida gaming operations, and more than 7,000 at Hard Rock International. Another 15,000 persons are employed by Hard Rock licensees around the world, or by vendors who operate various businesses under contracts at Seminole gaming sites. In addition, the Tribe generates billions of dollars in economic impact in Florida and elsewhere through vendor contracts and indirect spending spun-off from its gaming and governmental operations, as well as other business interests.

Reservation members receive dividends of over $100,000 per year.

Also realize the Seminoles are not the wealthiest tribe of Indians.

As usual you make my point for me. Thanks. I was pointing out that slavery was was 150 years ago, not the holocaust. Slavery ended in roughly 1865. The holocaust occurred ended in 1945. Just because you lived in Germany for a few years doesn't make you some sort of expert on a subject. Geesh. I lived in Quebec for a couple years, that hardly makes me some sort of expert on Quebec separatism.

Yes Germany paid billions of dollars to THOSE who were persecuted. Not their frigging great great great great grandchildren. I suspect there's a lot of folks thinking they are owed something for something that never happened to them, and THAT is the problem!
