Hey folks, a friend just pointed something that seems pretty obvious when I think about it: what's the deal with the little blue customs declaration forms you have to fill in on the plane? Let's say you're taking two cases of belongings, none of which you're going to sell. Do you have to declare it all? Three cases worth, even? I've been over for trips with a big carry-on bag and one suitcase and never declared anything, so I'm assuming the answer is no, but it's best to be sure.

It says things you are going to leave in the country, which could include gifts.

Basic rule for an immigrant situation is your "household good" are duty free. They are defined as things you have owned a year. If you buy things in duty free at the airport or plan to take over a stash of teabags and Marmite, then declare and value those things. I asked a few questions (by phone) of the CBP supervisor at our POE Houston. He told me write household goods on our form with no itemization or value.

Our joint form for six bags between us looked something like this--

600 teabags. $15.00

2 lbs cheddar $10.00

Teddy bear $20.00

Household goods $------

I fly quite a few international flights. I have noticed that most POE's are now electronic. No more little papers to fill out. Just before passport control you slide your passport in the machine and up pops your information. It asks you about 5 or 6 questions that are touch option. Then there is one option for "none of the above"...Make your choice and move to control ......very easy

He wrote household goods on his form, and declared the gifts and food items he brought. The IO basically told him he didn't even need to declare that as he was immigrating, which I don't think was accurate. I think POE experience will vary, but your household goods are going to be duty free, so pack those bags chock full. He crammed four cases worth no problem.
