If you're just shopping, they don't usually pull a full credit report. They need to verify your information. Also...credit inquiries are easily explainable when you are shopping around.

I know what you mean, but I did not require financing, so that's why I refused telling them my SSN. Had I been financing, I would have had to let them check my credit. I protect my SSN as much as possible.

When buying a car, CASH talks. Always when I purchase an automobile, if I have to finance, I DON'T do it through the dealership.I borrow from somewhere else and take the cash with me to the auto dealer. A buyer will get the worst possible price if they finance through the dealer. If a buyer tells the dealership, "I have $________ on me right now in cash and ready to drive away today with the car paid in full" suddenly they're willing and eager to make a deal. The last car I bought was $14,500, but I told the dealer I had $9,500 cash on me. I actually showed him the fat money holder, and I told him if I could pay that much for the car, I was ready to hand it over to him. We had the deal wrapped up within minutes and I drove away in a very pretty Mustang that still runs like a top and has never needed one repair even after 7 years.

I751 pending, and hubby has the stamp in his passport extending the GC until May 25, 2016

We bought a Mercedes Benz car from Mercedes Benz of Silver Spring,MD, three days ago. The finance officer handling our financing asked my husband if he is a permanent resident and he answered in the affirmative. She asked if he has a Greencard and he answered in the affirmative. She asked if he can email her a copy and he said he would do so. We drove home our new car.

Our understanding is that the stamp on the passport is a Greencard by all means. Because USCIS kept the 2-year GC when they stamped the passport, we went ahead and copied the temporary I-551stamp plus the biometrics page of hubby's foreign passport and emailed them to [her] at Mercedes Benz.

Her response: their bank wants A GREENCARD not the stamp. In fact, she says that hubby's employer should "provide a letter stating that you have the proper US Documentations."

Quite in awe here! Surprised that a bank, ANY bank, in the US wouldn't know that the stamp serves the same purpose as an actual Greencard. Surprised that a car dealer of the caliber of Mercedes Benz of Silver Spring wouldn't know the same, too.

On the other hand, are they even allowed to ask for the Greencard or residence status in order to sell us a Mercedes Benz?

This is an issue with the lender, not the car dealer. To secure the loan, the lender has their list of acceptable primary and secondary documentation, and they won't budge from it. If the lender doesn't already know what an I-551 stamp is, they are usually not going to take the time to figure it out. The best bet if the issue is still unresolved would be to look at different lenders. They often have different criteria.

The i551 is a green card. I would direct them to the USCIS website or even the I-9 document

Banks are not asking for this information. But there is no way I would contact my employer for something like that.

They approved after about a week. Sorry for not updating here in time. Quote from their finance manager's email...

"I wanted to let you know that I spoke with.... and they accepted the paperwork you sent in. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, but we are good to go."
