I agree with what other members have said, business people as well as employers want to be sure whomever they employ/do business with is legit.Even when you are a citizen, you will be required to prove it.I also agree with one member who said 'Mercedes benz' was mentioned four times, wouldnt you just say a 'car'.Hope you get what they asking for so you can enjoy your Mercedes.

Well considering Mercedes Benz is an international company who deals with International law, finance and otherwise, one would think they knew what an I-551 looked like.

It's not like they are buying the car from some second hand dealer who owns a lot in a shady part of town.

It has nothing to do with immigration. It has to do with financing. They want to verify your income. If you don't have a valid greencard, you could be deported and they run the risk of never getting paid...and then you are buying a high prices luxury vehicle which probably has other guidelines they need to follow. They also don't have to accept a stamp. They make their own rules. If you want the car then you have to follow.

If you don't have a valid greencard, you could be deported

Someone with a valid green card can equally be deported.

The OP has a valid green card (I-551). An I-551 in stamp form is just as good at proving permanent residency as an I-551 in card form (and in fact I would argue it is even better proof than a card because it is more likely to be issued more recently).

When I said could be deported I meant from the banks view point. It doesn't matter what the real truth is, it's the banks perception. They don't know immigration.

Pay cash, problem solved.

I had an issue with a new car salesman and his sales manager this year when I bought my car. They kept insisting they needed our SSNs. I told them they didn't because I was paying them in full with a check. I told them I didn't want them checking my credit report, which was what I thought they wanted to do. I also offered to log in to my bank account so they could see that my check wouldn't bounce. They kept insisting. I kept refusing. Boiler, why would you suppose they would need SSNs?

Long time since I bought a new car and I think they may have asked me as well.

Simple answer and most likely correct one is that they are stupid.

My guess is that if you stood up and walked out there would be a very quick change of attitude.

Or tell them that you can not deal with the transaction without knowing theirs..

That's kinda what happened. I said if they wanted to sell me the car, it would have to be without my personal info, except driver license.

Why is it such a big deal to give them your personal info? You have to give all that info anyway when you get insurance.

Your assumptions are way off. You are dealing with MB USA and their US finance operation. These are people just like you. They do their jobs, check for the proper information, etc. For example, why would you think that your neighbor who works for a division of (insert name of multinational company here) would have knowledge of the laws in the other countries where it operates? Most VJ members had little knowledge of the quirks of immigration until it was necessary for their lives. The same applies here.

The bank wants to be sure the borrower is able to pay and that the information supplied by the borrower is true. The finance company has a check list. Supply the information and move on.

To run a credit check. Show up with a cashier's check and they won't want to run a credit check.

Car dealers get lied to more than immigration officers. They have their routine and 99 times out of 100 it fits the situation. The salespeople just want to earn their comission. The sales manager wants to hit their numbers. Credit checks are run on most buyers. It's their process. Paying in full is not the norm for most new car transactions. Give them a reason to break the routine and still meet their needs (pay cash) and they will do so.

I just didn't want a car dealership pinging my credit report when I wasn't applying for credit. I don't give out my SSN at the grocery store or the mall either. Just some stubbornness on my part because they wouldn't give me a reason they had to have it.

I was in Costco this afternoon, they did not need my SSN.
