My wife filed her Adjustment of Status under our old last name. But I had been meaning to change my last name for a long time (long story). We finally moved to a county where changing your name is a simple process, so we did.

After this, I called USCIS customer service to ask them what should we do now that her legal name has been changed and I was told to wait until the interview to notify the officer of the change and it would be updated for us.

However, our interview was apparently waived and her case was approved. So I quickly submitted an e-request online stating that there is a typographical error of the name, so that they would hopefully change it before they made and mailed the green card.

But it was too late and she received her card with the old name on it. Then today USCIS replied to our e-request and only stated that we have to fill a form and pay $450 freaking dollars.

I called USCIS and requested to speak with an officer and explained this whole situation... and she only said I had to fill the form and pay the fee. For their mistake!

So USCIS told me to wait for the interview, which we never got... and they are telling us to pay $450 because of this.

Is there anything that can be done?

Not really understanding how this is the fault of the USCIS. Obviously, she could have changed her name at a far earlier point for no charge, but, as you say, it's a long untold story and I'm guessing USCIS isn't at fault there, either. Personally, I'd be happy that they approved with no interview and pay the $450.

By the way, I would never try to accuse a US agency of a typographical error if it wasn't actually a typographical error on their part.

It's the fault of USCIS because they told me to inform the interviewer of the name change and I never got to attend an interview? They didn't give me any other options.

And I'm not sure where you got the idea that we could have changed our name at an 'earlier point for no charge'.

As for the typographical error... this is what another USCIS customer representative told me to do after I realized my case had been approved without an interview and was trying to resolve it quickly. He told me to do that and file it under 'other reason' and then explain it in writing. Which is exactly what I did.
