Best to do is pick up the 1040 (and state tax--as I saw you don't live in WA, TX, TN or FL where there is NO state income tax) guides and forms at your local library. Make several copies of the empty forms, using the guide for calculations (the several copies are so you can get it right before submission).

When you're finally sure, fill out one copy (without signature) and copy that--then sign the original and send it in (basically similar steps for state tax).

You can also go to tax consultants (Liberty Tax, Jackson Hewitt, H&R Block) but you will then be charged a fee between $200 and $300 generally. You CAN deduct the expense (of the tax consultant) next year.

(I actually had mine done by JH recently--and I saw the charges).

So many variables to consider... What is your filing status, family situation such as dependants, etc.... there is no one number anyone can quote as to the minimum... In addition, even if you earned below the minimum and you had income tax withheld you would still want to file to recover this....

im single. no kids. no one claims me on their taxes.

Earning about $20k in income you will definetly need to file a return as you will have taxable income after deducting personal exemption ($3,300)and standard deduction ($5,150). So if my math is correct the $20,000 - $3,300 - $5,150 = $11,550. If you take the taxable of $11,550 would generate a tax liability of $1,355. You then compare your liability to your withholdings to determine if you are due a refund or you must remit a balance due.

YMMV

If you're not going to itemize then you could probably do a 1040EZ. It's very simple to fill out. Hopefully you get a nice return.
