Hi all!

I just wanted to ask and see how long the Adjustment of Status is? We are planning on getting married in the first week in January and applying for AOS after that - however, I was wondering what the fastest way for me to start working is?

As I don't really fancy sitting at home all day for months on end while the AOS phase takes place - I'd rather get out, work and meet new people to better adjust to my new home. So if anyone knows another route or any advice/ideas, please let me know!

I hear I can apply for the EAD without the AOS forms as long as we are married though and get that within 2 months?

It isn't worth it as your ead would expire 90 days after entry with your i-94. Then you'd have to wait another 90 days with your aos of not being able to work

Oh ok - I didn't know that! Thank you

i was slightly worried AOS would take 5 months haha so relieved to hear its 3.

Aos takes a year or so, the ead/ap takes about 3 months

Oh ok - I have a lot to learn yet about the AOS process but Myke and I will sit down together and gather our thoughts once we're together.

My passport arrived back today with my white packet. All feels so real now!

*edit: I see you're in florida! I'm moving to Tampa :D

Work out the math and the timeline to see which suits you.

POE Nov 30

Apply for EAD Dec 1. Cost $465.

Approval in 60-90 days + 10 days(?) to get card

Work eligibility arrives Feb 8 to Mar 8

BUT you can't work past when your I-94 expires on Feb 28.(90 days from POE)

POE Nov 30

Marry first week of Dec. (Husband gets tax break by filing jointly with wife for 2015)

File EAD with AOS package 2nd week of Dec.. Cost free

Approval in 60-90 days + 10 days(?) to get card

Work eligibility arrives Feb 22 to Mar 22

Authorization is good for one year.

Marry first week of Jan. (no tax break)

File AOS/EAD second week of Jan.

Work eligibility arrives Mar 22-April 22.

Work authorization good for a year.

Also, find a job while waiting on any EAD and go to InfoPass appointment asking for expedite on EAD due to job offer and financial hardship. Won't happen instantly, but could shave a few weeks off wait if approved.

**as always, timelines are a big guess

At 75 days after you apply for employment authorization you can submit a request to see what's happening. For me it worked. So, roughly 3 months in. Anyway, just make sure you tailor your CV/Resmue to the American standard and have an SSN sorted prior to actually recieving your ead :). It will help a lot.

You cann apply for an SSN on your K1 and it will just say "valid for work only with DHS authorization", by which time you recieve your EAD, you're ready to go!

Ummmm, you can do that?

Some people have expedited based on having a job. Those people from VJ that visited us last year did for one. Blank on the user name right now because it's not her real name. Anna Grant. Anna_Grant. She started a thread telling how she did it.
