This is such a great thread - lots of good cat vibes, here! Makes me miss a purry, pushy cat!

For those of you with litter-box issues:

My parents inherited an automatic litter box - it has a motion detector inside it which triggers a cleaner/scooper action a few minutes after the cat leaves the box; the clumps get scooped into a baggie at the end of the box and a lid flips down and closes over it.

I was SOOOO skeptical that this contraption would work, but one of their cats has the worlds stinkiest poo (no matter what they feed her) that bombs the whole house with toxic fumes just a few minutes after she does her business, so we tried this automatic box and it turns out to be completely terrific! They just collect the little baggie once every few days. Their house is once again stinkless. :luv: We did need to put a bar in the box so that she would use the litter far enough away from the baggie end to avoid clogging up the lid operation, but other than that, it works surprisingly well. Their other cat thinks litter boxes are the devil and will only go outside in the woods, which is just fine.

I think some people quite legitimately advocate keeping cats inside not just for their own safety but because they are such a huge and significant problem for wildlife - especially songbirds. But the truth is that that is sometimes really hard to do, especially if you get an adult cat; each cat is different, and if you have an inside cat or an outside cat, they'll let you know and other than going nuts from the meowing, there isn't much that you can do about it. My parents' inside cat HATES going outside and it would be cruel to put her out there. Their other cat needs his own little cat door because he's so busy running in and out of the house - he's eradicated their entire vole population and even brought home a little bat(!) the other night. :o Yes, he has all his shots.

Here is a pic of our now 10 week old Siberian kitten, Kipper.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We have two cats - Tommy resembles Alex's new kitty as he is like her a tuxedo one. Neither of them is declawed but they have been neutered and spayed.

We use clumping litter and I clean it twice a day. They go outside but only with me and on the leash/harness as we live in pretty much downtown Sarajevo.

Foodwise it is very true that cats will get picky once you change their food and it has happened to us as well. For their own sake (and they are now a year old), and after reading a lot on what goes into some brand-name cat foods (dry or wet), we will be moving to the all meat diet using the recipe we found here: www.catnutrition.org

Alex, good luck with your new addition to the family - you will see a cat is a true joy to have. Ours are little devils especially at 2am when Tommy comes to wake me up for feeding time but we really don't know what we would do without them! That's why they will be moving with us in the near future

Have a purrrfect day!

Your white cat is a Turkish Van, right? Supposedly, they should love water for some reason! And the tuxedo one is just adorable!

This is my tux Sydney who now lives with my Mum back home. He's a miserable ####### but I love him. And my new adopted 10 year old who lazes around everywhere. I HATE her name. How easy is it to change a cat's name after so long? Is it bad to do so? Answers on a postcard please. :)

Wow, not only did I insult her looks, but I called her "him". Sorry!

Currently unfortunately catless - but hopefully changing that soon! - but my brother and sister-in-laws wee felines are adorable too!

Popcorn (because he can jump like no other cat I have every seen - notice that the bowl he is in is right below the ceiling!)

Everyone's cats are so cute! I want that pair of Bosnian cats! :)

Already I can't imagine ever giving up my nameless cat! She is such a joy to have around! Already I've been looking up how to make sure she is allowed to immigrate to other countries with me, hehehe. I can't wait to be at home with her whenever I leave the house! I think she's the best thing in my life right now, not sure if that's a bad thing, hehehe
